We built the Black Hole™ backpack with an urban aesthetic and an alpine psyche to scoff at the full gambit of abuse from mud-caked streets to rough granite ridges. Tough and highly weather-resistant, it protects your gear from scuffs, scrapes and miles of rough handling. The large main pocket holds the lion’s share, with an internal sleeve to carry most 15" laptops or a hydration reservoir, and a mesh pocket equipped with a key keeper and an organizer panel to hold your phone and small items. The bucket-style opening replaces a traditional lid and contains a small stash pocket that seals with a reverse-coil zipper. Daisy chain lash points secure a skateboard or yoga mat, and a stealthy zippered front pocket holds quick-access items. With padded shoulder straps for comfort and a molded back panel that sheds moisture and allows a cooling airflow. Made from 13-oz 450-denier polyester ripstop (50% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Pack but ... This is a nice pack for day hiking. Size and weight are just about perfect for lunch, spare or unneeded clothes and water bottles (side holders). While the pack has a chest strap the absence of a waist belt is silly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Leaks like a sieve I bought this pack for traveling to Papua New Guinea where it rains nearly everyday. Being a longtime buyer of Patagonia products, I felt confident the first time it started raining. You can imagine my surprise when I returned to my room 10 minutes later only to find a pool of water at the bottom of the pack and my iPad, iPhone, and passport all soaked. Thank goodness my iPad and iPhone had protective covers. I managed to get my passport dried out, but will likely have to replace it now as the chip didn't work in it on the return trip. I let the pack dry out and gave it a shot a couple of other times just to see if somehow I didn't have a zipper closed or some other mistake. The result was the same each time - a pool of water at the bottom of the pack. My cheap, Eddie Bauer rain jacket that I thought wouldn't work at all worked better than this pack. I was very disappointed in the water-resistant performance. The shape, size, and other design elements are great. That's why I gave it 2 stars instead of one. Just don't buy it if you think you are getting extra protection from weather. AND DON'T LEAVE YOUR PASSPORT IN IT WITHOUT PUTTING IT IN A PLASTIC BAG! Stupid move on my part - admittedly - but I really had too much faith in the bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from stolen pack I bought this pack for use in our unpredictable northwest climate. I have not been able to get my hands on it yet because my oldest son won't give it back. It has been used as a school backpack, ultimate and biking pack, and everything sports pack. It holds up well in heavy rain, and seems to be enduring the wear and tear at the hands of a not so careful teen age boy. It looks like I will have to purchase another one for myself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What-a-pack! I spent a few WEEKS trying to find the best pack for my lifestyle. I never know what my day will bring! This pack allows me to carry everything I need for extended stays, for the commute to work, or for those longer day hikes. The waterproof feature is CLUTCH, the bucket top is way more convenient than I expected, and the stretch water bottle pockets on either side work great for temporary stash. I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase, it is definitely worth every penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Versatile Bag Not being too big or too small, this bag is replacing all my others. This has the handy pockets for everything including a laptop to function as a daily commuter -and it is rugged enough for me to use on my bicycle or motorcycle. It has the space and a comfortable fit for a daytime trek. I'm a fan of the two side pockets for beverages and a quick snack and other zippered pockets in the front and top for my other random things needed for quick access. The pockets and capacity is also a great carry on bag for travel. This is my first bag with the the top bucket opening and it is a vast improvement for packing unpacking and keeping things secure over the traditional openings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Water bottle pockets I absolutely love my blackhole pack! It has all the right pockets and can fit so much in it! The only thing I don't love is the side water bottle pockets. They are more of a mesh material and not as tough as the rest of the pack. I've had mine for about a year and it already has holes and probably won't be holding any water bottles here pretty soon. Overall a great purchase and would recommend it for everything to everybody! Just wish the water bottle pockets were tougher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel pack Spend two weeks on the road to Bali - multiple airports, taxis and excursions ... this is the perfect bag. It carried my camera (Nikon D750) three lenses, my 11-inch macbook air, journal, sunglasses, pens/highlighter, water bottle, jacket, passport/wallet and much more. I got the navy one, which I like a lot. The fit was comfortable and never rubbed my shoulders even while wearing a tank or shirtless on the Bali scooters. LOVE the top loader feature, so nice. Zippers seemed sturdy and ran smoothly on the teeth. And the water resistant material is nice for light rain and brushing off sand and dirt. Overall, Patagonia does packs well!
