Usually when a sports car meets a truck, the results aren’t pretty. But in the case of our Black Hole™ Wheeled Duffel, the mash-up is a burly carry-on duffel with precision handling. Tough and highly weather-resistant, this bomber bag protects your gear from the scuffs and scrapes of wayward journeys. Its zippered U-shaped lid—with two zippered internal mesh pockets on the underside to keep small items organized—offers quick and easy access to the main compartment. A zippered exterior pocket provides a secure and handy spot for your boarding pass, energy bar or paperback. The sturdy frame sheet protects the duffel from baggage-handler abuse and keeps your Black Hole™ upright, even when it’s loaded to the max. Oversized wheels deliver a smooth ride, whether you’re crossing the tarmac or following a cobblestone street. Carrying options include the main webbing handles (with snap closure); a 2-position, telescoping handle; or the two haul loops on either end. You can lash additional gear to the outside with the four corner-mounted daisy chains. Made from 15-oz 900-denier polyester ripstop (50% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Expected an update to the Freightliner... After finally wearing out my Freightliner, this Black Hole Duffel came as a replacement. It seems like the new version is a "dumbed-down" Freightliner, and I was expecting a bit more here. I check my bags, so a larger capacity was key. This bag is not the best for week-long trips. Sadly, I'll reach for other roller bags now when I'm going overseas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A really great carryon The first thing I did when I got this bag is to compare with with an old rolling TSA approved carry-on piece of luggage. Check! Then rather than writing a review right away I used it on 10 different flights. Never had to check it in, although one of those flights was on a smaller plane, I took my jacket out and put it in the overhead by turning it sideways. Finally, you will be surprised how much stuff you can put into a 45L bag like this. If you do not require a lot of gimmicky compartments, this is the travel bag for you. The one main compartment, along with the small outer, and the organizer inside keeps things simple to store and easy to find.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bag- fits jetBlue and American overhead bins Bought this for small boat Alaska cruise where we need something that rolls, yet stores more compactly than standard rollaboard. I was concerned about whether we'd have any hassle with carry-on size restrictions so took it to airport to check it in American and jetBlue sizers before we traveled. Fit fine in both as long as you don't stuff it. In actual plane overhead bins (jetBlue A320, American B737-800) it fits with room to spare: wheels out. (See photos) It's about 2 lbs lighter than our Tumi rollaboards, so far with the kind of superior durability you'd expect from Patagonia: material, zippers, wheels, axles, and handles. Appearance is low on our list of priorities, but we were surprised by compliments this week: from TSA screener, flight attendants, and fellow passengers. I guess it's a nice departure from the ubiquitous rolling black boxes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these perfect bags and the beating they take! I can't say enough about the size and design of these bags. If I had one HUGE wish for improvement of all Patagonia's travel bags it would be a simple baggage tag incorporated at the top or somewhere out of the way where you could slide a business card or contact info card of some sort. They did this with early MLC bag models but seemed to have abandoned the idea. I know they can do it in a way that won't create a weak spot or rip off during baggage handling. It is Patagonia after all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel companion!! I use this bag for short trips and as great carry on bag. When I first read the reviews I was worried about the size due to the 1" over the airline dimensions but I have had absolutely zero problems with using it as a carry on. The bag is super durable and protects everything that I bring. Also it is the perfect size for a weekend get away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy Duty Traveler After checking this bag four times a week for the past three months, this thing stands up to the rigors of airline travel. The materials used in constructing this bag are top notch in the durability column, the outer material also cleans up well with a soapy cloth. I've been flying regularly for years and this is by far the toughest bag for the money, not to mention it's easily identifiable on the carousel. I would buy this bag again and again if I needed to, although I really don't see an end in sight for my current Black Hole.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great if you like to roll the dice with airlines I love this roomy, smooth-rolling bag. However, I have some concerns for air travel. First is that the only way to quickly dig into the bag to get something out (say, at the check-in counter at the airport), is to disconnect the velcro handles around the straps, then unzip the full compartment. Then, when you're done, you've gotta wrap the velcro handles again, otherwise you'll loop yourself around things with the straps flailing about on the frantic run down to your gate. It just adds a bit of time when travelling. Another concern: the maximum dimensions for carry-on bags, for most airlines, are typically 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches, totaling 45" (and I've heard they are going to make these smaller soon). The Black Hole Wheeled Duffel 45L bag is a *tiny bit* too large on two of those dimensions (23.5" x 13" x 10.5", totaling 46"), but it's soft-sided, and a bit oddly shaped, which can help you sneak it past the carry-on sizing box. I risked it by bringing it on-board my most recent flight, but I'm hesitant next time due to the stringent airline rules. I guess if you take it on-board with the understanding that it *may* end up being gate-checked, then you'll be OK. You also need to put it into the overhead compartments with the wheels out, so that the top of the bag can squish into the overhead. Other than these two concerns, I love the bag! But I do hope the next version conforms to airline rules for carry-ons.
