Today’s job descriptions include the ability to cross time zones unfazed, eat lunch while running through crowds and respond to messages from the bouncing aisle of a packed train. With the workweek in mind, our designers created the Headway Brief. It combines the rock-tough durability of our climbing packs with an on-the-go urban aesthetic to meet the demands of our action-sequence lives. Amply sized to carry your day-to-day belongings along with the essentials for an extended weekend, the Headway features a raised-off-the-bottom electronics pocket with separate padded sleeves to hold a laptop (fits most 15" laptops) and your e-reader. The main compartment, accessed via a clamshell-opening zipper, holds bulky items like lunch, a sweater and that novel you’re writing in longhand; mesh pockets provide additional storage. A smaller front compartment keeps you organized with a key clip, mesh stash pockets for your phone and earbuds, and a zip-closing pocket to keep your thumb drive handy. Other details include an outside stash pocket for magazines and a boarding pass; briefcase-style carrying handles; and a fully adjustable, removable shoulder strap. Made from 9.25-oz 940-denier Cordura® Ballistic nylon with a polyurethane coating and lined with 8.4-oz 600-denier 100% recycled polyester. Both fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from JUST THE RIGHT SIZE I have been very happy with this brief case. It is just the right size for my MacBook, iPad and Patagonia shave kit. Its design is functional and looks good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bag for all around utility My wife and I love the outdoors, surprisingly, we were looking for a bag to suit not only our travels, but to help raise our newborn daughter to do the same and respect the environment. We bought this bag as a diaper bag because of the volume and multiple pockets to hold our valuables and her essentials whether we are at the beach, hiking, or on the road traveling. We know it will last us for many years and our other kiddos we expect along the way and can't wait to pass it down to them when they get older in the spirit of resourcefulness as the Patagonia brand lives up to!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this briefcase, very well constructed. Kind of labored over this decision. My existing bag needed to be replaced and I wanted a durable version. I'm really impressed with the material and the construction. Learned about the company through the NPR podcast "How I Built This" interview with founder Yvon Chouinard. Love the "Iron Clad" warranty!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Functional Product Purchased the Headway for work related use, good looking and quite functional. After some use the Brief's materials 'loosened' up and became even more user friendly. Can't wait to try it as an airline carry-on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for may everyday bag. This bag is great for my day to day work bag. My computer, books, files, and supplies fit perfectly. I plan to use it for a carry-on bag on my next flight.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Would be perfect if it was a little bigger I got this as a companion carry-on bag to go with my Headway MLC 45. That larger 45L bag is fantastic, but this bag was somewhat disappointing. There is so much to like about this bag but it is simply too small as a travel bag. (And while I don't use it as a briefcase, I find it too small to be a useful briefcase because you could not carry legal length files in it, and it is not deep enough to carry many files.) If it was 10-20% bigger, I think it would then be the perfect size (i.e., 24L-26L). The bag needs to be a couple inches longer, and maybe an inch wider (but not taller), then it would still fit under an airline seat. At the current size, a man can't carry much clothing in the main compartment and there is too much space dedicated to a large laptop and tablet. Most people travel with a tablet or compact laptop nowadays, not a big 17" laptop. Unfortunately you really can't carry much else in the laptop compartment unless you have a magazines or papers that could slip in there. Also, I found the stiffener in the one side of the bag was annoying, unnecessary, and made the bag less stable when standing up. It has some of the same useful organization features as the larger MLC 45 bag for stashing tickets, passports, pens, papers, etc. With all of that said, the quality is typical Patagonia - outstanding.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some great features, some poor design choices I purchased this on a trip to Europe.. (also bought a matching Headway Carry-On bag as well). My findings: Positives - Bag is great quality - Straps and Stitching were perfect - Lots of organization options, storage for pens, notepads etc at the front, 2 compartments behind allow for great org - The carry handle is comfortable - The carry-on handle pass through (allowing it to be carried on top of roller luggage) is fantastic - every bag should have this option Negatives - Bag does not sit upright on the floor, if you have a laptop and nothing in the other compartments, the bag will fall over. Every. Single. Time. No matter how you try to stand it up (the bottom of the bag is angled, and not like the photo straight). - You can only carry the bag with a laptop in it nearest to you, the bags handles are offset making carrying "weird" if you don't carry it that way around - The front pocket has lots of great storage pockets, however if the bag is packed, you can hardly get in, making it difficult to find items as it's only zipped at the top. The front panel NEEDS to be a clamshell cover so it can be opened completely. - The cover for the shoulder strap will slip on anything. It needs an anti-slip feature and more padding. Some annoying negatives which I raised with customer service. They offered to take back the bag without any prompting from me! I refused ;-) Fantastic & quick customer service which will definitely lead me to purchase from them in the future.
