A tribute to the realities of surfing, our Jalama answers the age-old question of what to do when your early-morning session ends with a pile of damp gear. The wet/dry Jalama segregates your goods in its main compartment with a seam-sealed, waterproof barrier allowing you to catch an early swim or surf and still arrive at work organized for the day. This divider lifts up so you can easily remove sand and dirt from your pack. A second compartment holds books and papers and features a padded sleeve for 17" laptops. An internal organization panel adds a place for small essentials along with a secure lanyard for your keys. A small exterior pocket keeps a phone and sunglasses within easy reach. The airflow mesh shoulder straps and back panel provide comfort for the long haul and breathe to keep you cool during hot pursuits. Details include stretch-woven water-bottle pockets, exterior lash points for a yoga pad or bike lock and a top-mounted, reinforced haul handle. Made from 450-denier recycled polyester plain weave, with a 450-denier recycled polyester ripstop bottom. The lining is 200-denier 100% polyester. All fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Your everyday pack I have had this pack for about exactly 1 year now and I absolutely love it. It's the perfect size whether I just want to throw a couple books in it or take it for a day hike. It holds up well to the light abuse I've given it whether that be tossing it in my passenger seat or on the ground while I take a water break. The side pockets are perfect for 32 oz. water bottles, the small front pockets hold everything I need like my wallet, keys, extra deodorant and socks, and the main compartments fit everything else. I take this with me to work everyday, on my weekend hikes to the white mountains, and to the city when I visit the Patagonia store in Boston. It cleans well if dirt gets on it and the zippers have never once gotten stuck. Great pack! My ONE and only complaint, though it's no default of the pack, is it isn't very water resistant. It does have the DWR finish, but with anything more than a light sprinkle the water gets right through. I plan on spraying it with KIWI Camp Dry waterproofing spray (I've done mega research and it is safe) and hopefully this works well. It's not designed to be waterproof in and of itself which is why I still rate it at 5 stars. But c'mon is it that hard to do?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't work for a school backpack This pack has so many great features, I was hoping to have my child use it for both school and summer camp, especially since it has the waterproof area which I thought would be great for wet swim gear. Unfortunately, it's just not large enough to fit a binder, if only it were just a bit wider...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE the Jalama Pack! Super happy with my Jalama Pack. At 5'2", I was looking for a do-everything pack that would accommodate my 17-inch Dell laptop, have roomy, well-thought-out compartments, and fit comfortably without looking too mambo on my back. This pack is perfect! And, unlike some other reviewers who like open side pockets for water bottles, I prefer the zip-up pockets since they hold the contents secure during movement. Thanks, Patagonia!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great backpack I love this so far! My only wish is that the red strap at the top is thicker and more secure when hanging the bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality pack! The middle pouch is sort of weird and awkward. I love the large side pouches for water bottles and other goodies. The weight is distributed very well; very comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very light, very versatile This is the second one of these I've bought - I gave my first to my wife to replace her aging backpack. This is a great everyday backpack with one key extra feature - the middle pouch is sealed off from the rest of the pack to carry wet items. I use it to carry my swimsuit and other gear after my weekly swim at my local indoor poo. The pack has a sold assortment of pocket sizes, carries a laptop as well, and fits great, even when loaded. I cant' remember a backpack I've liked more, and I'm 44.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Pack Been using this pack for about a month now and I have no complaints. The side pockets are large enough to hold my water bottle, I love the water proof compartment and the smaller, accessory, pockets meet my needs for storing phone, keys, etc. The zippers are smooth, but do seem light duty. As long as the zippers stay reliable with time and wear, no worries. The pack does appear a little small on my frame, 6'2" 240 lbs, but you know you're buying a 28L pack, so not a problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for trips and everyday Bought this to use as my everyday bag back and forth to the office as well as work/personal trips. Great for storing laptop and files in the back zipper pocket, clothes and other nubbins in the main pocket, organize chargers, wallet, phone, etc in the front. Handy top pocket for keys, change, multi-tool, etc. Side pockets are great for water, food, gloves, etc... Outer straps have worked for rolled up jackets or skateboard. I would recommend to the product development team to use a beefier denier nylon on the outer area beneath the straps to protect against rub/fray from grip tape against the pack. Just got back from Salt Lake where one of the chest straps popped off and i've been unable to slide it back on yet. Granted I was trying in 35 degree rain, but it seemed to pop off pretty easily.
