The problem is that you never see it coming on the Diamond. One moment you’re climbing dauntingly steep granite at 13,000 feet. The next, you’re staring at sinister clouds roiling over the summit. Seconds later, lightning cracks. The Alpine Houdini® keeps you dry with an H2No® Performance Standard fabric that combines a waterproof membrane, an ultralight 100% nylon ripstop shell and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. It’s emergency rainwear that blocks wind and traps your heat on chilly belay ledges, packs into a single chest pocket (now on the exterior of the jacket, with clip-in loop), and seals up with elastic wrist cuffs and a single-pull drawcord waist. With helmet-compatible, single-pull adjustable hood.
  • Ultralight 2.5-layer waterproof/breathable H2No® Performance Standard shell fabric
  • Coated, watertight center-front zipper has minimal interior storm flap; taped seams throughout entire garment
  • Alpine helmet-compatible hood with laminated visor and single-pull adjustment rolls down and stows with a simplified cord-and-hook design
  • Exterior left-chest pocket with coated, watertight zipper doubles as self-stuff pouch with streamlined shape and carabiner clip-in loop
  • Elasticized cuffs and a minimal single-pull adjustable drawcord hem seal out weather
  • H2No® Performance Standard shell: 2.5-layer, 1.9-oz 30-denier 100% nylon ripstop with a waterproof/breathable barrier and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Fabric is certified as bluesign® approved

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

DWR
(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Men's Alpine Houdini® Jacket is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight protection but a couple of issues Terrifically lightweight and provides nice rain protection. Small always fits me well in all Patagonia products. This one has pretty long sleeves though, as mentioned in other reviews. Not horrible, but definitely longer than their other outerwear. The zipper is the big issue to me though. It catches on the storm flap on the right side, it catches on the mini-storm flap on the left side, then catches on the zipper garage at the top. You can't just put it on and zip it up. Takes both hands manipulating the storm flaps and the zipper garage and a few attempts to get it zipped to the top. Every time. I had one of the first versions of the Alpine Houdini several years ago. This one is better with the addition of the chest pocket on the outside and the metal zipper pulls (the old one had only the bungee cord pulls attached to the zipper head). Overall this is a good jacket, but the zipper issues keep it from being great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fits the Gap I bought this Houdini a month ago (after being relieved of my Torrent Shell Stretch in San Francisco), and it mostly does what I want it to do: sheds most of the rain, and packs away small enough that I forget that I've got it at the bottom of my pack. I bought one size larger (M) than I wear in the Ultralight Down Sweater (S), and if I could do it again I think that I would have purchased a small. The sleeves are a bit long -- like many Patagonia products -- this, combined with the elastic cuff creates the effect of MC Hammer pants at your wrists, leading to pooling water. As well, and I was warned about this so I don't fault it. The lightness + waterproof comes at a lack of breathability. If you're using this in an upward pursuit, you're going to sweat. Probably a lot. Overall, the Houdini has bailed me out enough times that I'm happy I got it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So close!!! This is an almost perfect rain jacket. It's ultra light, waterproof, acceptably breathable, and a great fit for more athletic guys. But...it lacks hand pockets. If Patagonia would make hand pockets in the same fashion as the chest pocket, I'd look no further for a rain jacket. P.S. It also works great as a light shell on windy days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for fall I live in Michigan and the weather here just started to get colder and it has been rainy. This jacket is perfect for a daily driver in bad fall weather.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lightweight, but... One of the best reviewed options for a true ultralight rain jacket. Initial impressions: Fit is pretty roomy but I would order your usual size if you plan to layer under it. I can wear a medium Patagonia puffy under the medium Alpine Houdini and it is a good match. Much different fit than the regular Houdini which will barely layer over my t-shirt in a medium. The hood on this jacket is enormous. Fortunately it has an elastic cord to tighten it but it takes 'helmet friendly' a bit far. Fabric is very noisy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what it is supposed to be I used this on a backpack in the Wind River Range. It deployed quickly in a hail storm kept me dry in subsequent rain and blocked the ensuing chilling winds. This over a nano air jacket kept me comfortable in the thirties in camp. A great piece of gear and light to boot. Highly recommended when ounces count. g

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lightweight Jacket Packs to almost nothing. Weighs almost nothing. But is water resistant enough for most activities in the the rain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Hiking. I can't rave enough about this jacket. The sizing is perfect (Ask their customer service if you have any questions on size), H2No works like a dream, and it stuffs into the breast pocket. I've taken it on several spring hikes in Northern MN, and it was perfect for layering over a light sweater.
