UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Men's Bandito Shirt is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A warm weather workhorse A great warm weather shirt. This short is a workhorse that I would recommend for all hiking trips and climbing excursions. It drys fairly quickly and is resistant to staining. Ironing out all of the wrinkles can be a little challenging as the shirt seems to be prone to them. I would also recommend sizing up a bit if you have broad shoulders of a wide back/ athletic build as I can not completely "hug" myself in this shirt because it gets a little tight across the back/shoulders. This causes a little bit of restriction of movement but nothing major. Great shirt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome shirt for hot weather My new favorite shirt. I've had it for about 3 months now and loved it all summer long - around town, on the river, just about everywhere. I found the fit to be excellent; I'm 5'10", 155lbs, about a 38R chest and the small fits me perfectly. I love the slim fit, snap front, slightly spread color and rear vent. Though its polyester it wears like a light cotton fabric - comfy, light, and smooth. Hope Patagonia brings this back next year in many more colors!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from small arms/shoulders I really wanted to like the shirt. The color, snap buttons, and vents are all fantastic and well thought out. But I don't understand the cut. The shoulders are very tight and the sleeves are muscle shirt small as well. The cut up into the armpits run high which increases pit sweating - not what you want in a hot weather shirt. I tried an XL but it was just too wide in the body and I am typically a M or L with Patagonia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wear it for a week straight... While traveling I've worn the Bandito for so many days straight you'd think it could walk around on it's own. You could literally take a shower with it on, soap and rinse, and be dry in twenty minutes if there is a breeze. Ultralight for hot, sweaty summer days running a Stihl 461, digging post holes or climbing dusty trails on your bike. Somehow I've washed out all the grease stains and it still looks good. I'm a muscular 6' tall and the XL is a perfect fit. The only improvement would be more available colors.
