A use and abuse must-have for groveling up a chimney pitch or liberating an untracked line through gnarled pines. Our Capilene® Midweight fabric hits the sweet spot of weight, breathability and wicking that, worn alone or with additional layers, is the essence of versatility. It keeps you dry and comfortable when worn during high-exertion activities in cool-to-moderate temperatures and insulates beneath a shell in cold weather. Constructed with a Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric, it has a smooth face for easy layering and a brushed-back grid that aids in wicking as well as warmth. The fabric has 63-93% recycled-polyester content and is treated with Polygiene® permanent odor control. Features include a long center-front zipper for venting, internal neck tape for next-to-skin comfort, full underarm gussets for unhindered shoulder mobility, elastic thumb loops for secure hand coverage, flatlock seams to minimize chafing, offset shoulder and side seams to lie smoothly beneath pack straps, and a drop tail for additional coverage.
  • Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric has a smooth face for easy layering; fabric’s brushed grid pattern next to skin provides superior warmth, breathability and moisture-wicking performance with Polygiene® permanent odor control
  • Self-fabric backing on collar with internal neck tape for comfort; locker loop for hang-drying
  • Long center-front zipper vents body heat and is backed by kissing welts for low-bulk comfort next to skin
  • Offset shoulder seams eliminate chafing under pack straps
  • Full underarm gusset for range of motion and chafe-free comfort
  • Elastic thumb loops for secure hand coverage
  • Flatlock seams to minimize chafing; drop tail for more coverage

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best of the best. The color and quality are what you expect from Patagonia. The standard for the rest.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Itchy seams The seams are super uncomfortable against bare skin. I think this would be a problem on long runs or paddle trips. My r1 hoody and pullover are super soft and the seams are not noticeable. The midweight cap fabric is nice, but the seams are really rough. Some reviews say same. Most don't mention this problem. Perhaps a bad lot? I'm probably going to have to return this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Baselayer Bought this product for use as baselayer particularly on those chilly mornings at anchor and later in the morning when the breezes pick up. Love the thumb loops.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not purchase this item At first I thought the itch was coming from the typical tag inside the garment so my wife removed the tag. No joy! There are two seams armpit to tail of the garment which have the plastic thread ends making the product unwearable. If you want to cuddle up to a cactus this is your item, otherwise avoid it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New fabric is great, sleeves a tad loose The new fabric is very nice; somewhere between the old cap 2 and 3 but closer to 2, and thats a good thing as far as I am concerned as it makes the shirt more versatile. Like the old cap 2, it is comfortable next to skin, very light, breathable and dries quickly. It is definitely not as warm as the old cap 3. The fit is noticeably more relaxed than the prior generation, which was very fitted. I like the new fit through the shoulders and torso where it remains slim enough to layer without bunching up, but the extra space is enough to make it a shirt that I feel more comfortable wearing into a store. The only thing I dont like as much is the fit of the lower part of the sleeves, which just seem to have a bit of extra fabric flopping around. This does make it easier to push the sleeves up and makes using the thumb loops a bit more comfortable, but when worn normally there just seems to be a bit of redundant fabric. Not a deal breaker by any means, and it may make the shirt more functional if you really like to use the thumb loops, because as I said, it gives you more space to stretch the sleeve down over your hand. The length of the sleeves and shirt is perfect, as is the taller collar design, which is much improved over the sort of half collar that was used on last years cap 2/3 zip necks. Overall this is a very useful layer; it will work great as a cold weather baselayer for active pursuits and as a stand alone layer for highly aerobic activities in cool weather. In mild weather it is great for walks and lounging around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delivers on Warmth The day after receiving the Capilene mid-weight zip-neck we had the first real cold-snap in VT this winter The next morning I layered up with the temps at home a hair under 0 degrees F. I got a big surprise at the ski area as the winds were howling making the chill-factor between -12

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Base Layer for Skiing I have used this base layer for the last month skiing in temps around 15-20 degrees F in Japan and absolutely love it. Paired with my Nano Puff and Patagonia Shell, it can't be beat. Will order a couple more for both my wife and me. I'm 5'10 and 165 lbs and the Medium fits perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great wicking base layer This new Capilene Midweight fills the gap between lightweight capilene and the R1 1/2 zip I have used for years while skinning/backcountry. Nothing worse that getting to the top soaking wet, then freezing or being soggy the rest of the day. I am 6', 180lbs, and large fits perfect. The midweight amazingly wicks away moisture from the skin layer to outside unlike anything I have used. You can actually see the water on the outside while the inside feels dry. Love the weight of it and fabric pattern. On a hard hike up, this is the only layer needed on a cool winter day or layered with a vest on a cold day works for me perfectly. Used it several times this year for resort downhill as a base layer as well-love it there too (although the new lightweight capilene is the most killer base layer for that hands down-it's like silky tissue paper fabric in a good way). No pokey thread ends on the side of the torso, under the arm that bug like some of the other base layers from years past. Just ordered 2 more.
