In the high desert, fall means frosty mornings and afternoon temperatures that can go to the extreme in either direction. That’s when the tough and versatile Long-Sleeved R1® Field 1/4-Zip comes into its own. Made with lightweight, fast-wicking 6.3-oz 93% recycled polyester/7% spandex stretch fleece for comfort and insulation across a wide range of temperatures, the R1 Field moves with you and takes the chill out of the air. The shoulders, forearms and hem are reinforced with 96% nylon/4% spandex for enhanced durability and have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish to ward off light showers or dew-soaked vegetation. A single left-chest pocket is zippered for security, and when you’ve put enough miles behind you to heat up, the shirt compresses for easy packability.

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Men's L/S R1 Field 1/4 Zip is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great concept I love this fleece. I'm 5'9" and 180 and usually wear larges. I bought a large and it fits great in the body but the arms are very long. I like this so much I don't mind having the arms tailored to fit. Writing this review as I look to buy another one (in large).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shirt?! This is called a field shirt - I wear it as outerwear almost every day - I have two of them and planning to obtain another. I hope that Patagonia adds it to their women's line my wife would love it in different colors!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome shirt, but runs large. This is a great shirt, but it definitely runs on the large side. I'm normally a Large in most Patagonia gear (5'11'', 43" chest, 35" sleeve, 16 1/2" neck). I originally ordered this in a large, but it was huge - 52" armpit to armpit, 36" centre back to sleeve cuff, 18" neck. It hung on me like a drape. For my purposes I want this to fit more closely to get the full benefit of the wicking fleece. In my opinion the fit on the Patagonia model is too loose if you look at the back, neck, and sleeves. I sized down to a Medium and it's perfect for me - nice close fit without being too tight - 47" a-a, 34" cb-sc, 17" neck. The sleeves were still a touch too long (they fit like on the model), so I turned them up one hem-width and re-hemmed them with some shock-cord to bring them in nice and close to my wrists. Note to Patagonia designers - elasticized cuffs make this a totally bomber piece. Got this for half price so I'm thoroughly stoked about it. Can't wait to take it backpacking.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from gets the job done but not great Have worn the R1 approximately 20 times in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Chief complaint is a slightly tight fit in shoulders and armpits (where pecs meet armpit in front). I am very average medium build 175 lbs and 5'9" and not muscular and prefer looser fit through pits/shoulders. A tight fit in that area just causes more sweaty pits during activities or when you go inside after being outside. Otherwise, R1 performs similarly to like garments from other manufacturers. Also, previous rater is correct- the material pills pretty quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Field Gear - Warm, Breathable, Sharp Looking I use it a lot for leading nature walks as it works well as an outer layer or a mid-layer. Breaths well. Works well with a back pack. Distinctive style. Works well tucked in or un-tucked. It is a favorite as it is the ultimate hi-tech sweatshirt that takes a licking and keeps on ticking in a variety of climactic conditions to include light rain. Comfortable
