When dodgy mountain weather grinds your pace down to stop and go, these soft and stretchy bottoms provide the warmth you need to stay put, combined with the breathability and technical performance needed for moving along. We make all our Merino Air® baselayers from a blend of merino wool sourced from the grasslands of Patagonia (51%) and recycled polyester (49%). We spin the wool fibers with an innovative technology that creates a loftier yarn with a superior warmth-to-weight ratio. The lofted wool and recycled polyester yarns are then knit directly into a seamless garment with minimal waste. The result is a baselayer with superior performance qualities; it offers a stretchy, chafe-free fit, lightweight warmth, exceptional breathability and the natural odor-fighting properties of wool.
  • Fine merino wool from the grasslands of Patagonia blended with Capilene® recycled polyester for improved wicking, durability and dry time
  • 18.9 micron-gauge yarn; lofted wool innovation
  • Fabric is soft against skin and stretches to move with the body
  • Seamless 3D construction eliminates chafe points through the entire garment and has almost no wasted material
  • Elastic waistband is brushed for next-to-skin softness
  • Functional fly
  • 5.6-oz (190-g) 51% chlorine-free merino wool/49% recycled polyester seamless zigzag knit
  • 175 g (6.2 oz)
  • Made in Hong Kong.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Under Layer for super cold days I wore these on a 35 deg day under a jacket and over-heated. Wore them again when it under 20 deg and fared much better. These are comfortable, but crazy long legs. i guess they decided to make them long length to fit anybody, but it's a bit of a hassle to have it bunched up at the ankle, i may have to have these tailored

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept me toasty on the JMT I used these when I thru hiked the John Muir Trail this past summer. The temperatures were a bit cooler than I expected in August, and these were my go-to layering piece. Light weight, and kept me warm! Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super comfy, nice and long The Air weave take up a little more space, but is really comfortable, seems warm, and I don't think it weights much more than regular. They're also nice and warm, especially compared to some synthetic ones I bought a few years ago from Patagonia that were too small for me. I'm tall and skinny so often have trouble finding stuff long enough but these are perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest Long Underwear Ever In my 27 years of being an outdoor professional from ski race coaching to fly fishing guiding, I have never found a pair of long underwear that was more than just a layering piece until now. These are super warm and soft against the skin, have not bound up at all and wick moisture away from the skin with ease. Have not had issues with itching as one might expect with a wool product and have not had any issues with smell after being worn for a week straight, literally not coming off my body the entire time. Work great under another heavier layering piece but also right against the outer layer so quite versatile as far as what your needs might be. Get a pair now!
