The toughest days on the water are often the most instructive: they make us focus on the subtle details, reduce the variables and simplify our approach. We applied that same thinking to the toughest, most puncture-resistant waders we know how to make—and we made them even better. Our Rio Gallegos Waders are built from our tested-and-proven 4-layer H2No® Performance Standard fabric package using single-seam construction to route critical seams away from areas of high wear, and their robust feature set offers the highest level of comfort, performance and durability. A slightly trimmer profile around the hip, waist and chest provides an improved fit that still easily accepts layers for long, cold sessions, while the innovative internal suspension system allows easy conversion to waist height and quick relief without having to remove your jacket. Motion-oriented patterning through the crotch means it’s no problem to swing a leg over gunwales, and articulation in the leg is designed for moments when fishing brings you to your knees—like keeping a fish wet during the photograph and release. If you fish in and out of boats, you’ll also appreciate the flat-panel gravel guards: they drain water quickly while resisting abrasion and wear while hiking or wading. Our booties have a more anatomical, sock-like fit and are made from a denser 4mm neoprene that resists compaction better over the long haul; they also have a poly-grid lining for added comfort. Outside, there’s a reach-through handwarmer pocket and large chest pocket with water-resistant horizontal zip for easy access to tippet spools, nippers and floatant. Interior gear storage includes a waterproof, flip-out welded TPU pocket, two drop-in stretch pockets and two internal daisy chains for tools. Other fishing-friendly features: center-back hanger loop for easy drying; stretch wading belt with low-profile buckle; removable knee pads; and a raised Fitz Roy Trout logo. Field repair kit included.
  • H2No® Performance Standard polyester microfiber shell with proprietary waterproof/breathable barrier and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish; highly durable and puncture-resistant fabric has no multiple layers or added weight
  • Waist-mounted EZ-Lock suspenders allow easy conversion from chest to waist height for venting or quick relief, without having to remove jacket; full elastic belt
  • Innovative SSC (single-seam construction) seaming eliminates seams from highest wear points on inside of legs
  • Interior organization: welded TPU-waterproof zippered pocket flips out for easy access; two drop-in stretch pockets; two internal daisy chains for tools; center-back hanger loop for easy drying
  • Exterior organization: reach-through handwarmer pocket; large chest pocket with horizontal water-resistant zipper; laser-cut Hypalon® utility keeper on suspenders allows easy access to tools or nippers
  • Articulated legs; removable foam knee pads
  • Anatomical left and right booties have lower volume, a more sock-like fit and are poly-grid lined for additional warmth and comfort; resilient 4mm neoprene resists compaction for greater durability

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Patagonia developed the 4-layer fabric construction for our waders to increase breathability and abrasion resistance, move moisture away from the body, and decrease the weight.

Our exterior fabrics are densely woven 100% polyester microfibers for durability and puncture resistance. On one side we apply our H2No® waterproof coating for waterproof/breathable performance. On the other side we apply a Hydrophilic laminate that pulls moisture away from the body so it can be passed out through the exterior shell.

To protect the hydrophilic laminate we use a soft polyester tricot lining that increases abrasion resistance yet maintains a soft, supple drape. Finally, we apply a DWR (durable water repellent) treatment as the first line of defense in keeping these waders waterproof.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A perfect tool The water moves fast and cold and the bend I can see a quarter mile up river beckons in the late afternoon sun. Punctuated by a few large boulders, crystal clear slow moving water is blocked by steep river banks, thick brush and some fast flowing side channels. I set off into the woods, ducking, weaving and crunching my way through the thicket to find nirvana. Finally I emerge on a gravel spit, to my right, a snow capped mountain provides the back drop for some fast moving water which flows down to a large pool. Studded with 4 large boulders, the water deepens, slows and eddies lazily. I wade out in my new Rio Gallegos and spend the better part of the next hour swinging flies through the pool. Eventually its time to go and its getting dark so I begin to head back to the car crashing through the brush. Did not land any fish but I did catch some peace of mind and fresh air in an amazing place with an exceptional product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vastly Improve Fit From Previous Generations I'm 6'5" 210lb size 13 shoe. The Large Tall is perfect fit for medium layering underneath for chilly weather. For cold weather wading, probably a wading jacket is in order. They really took the perfect excess of material off the bootie, legs and torso from the previous generations. I've had all three generations of the Rio Gallegos wader and this is by far the best iteration. Wish they made an extra tall(orvis does) for even more articulation in the knees, however, hiking was still great. The only downgrade is the material of the elastic straps of the suspenders and wading belt. You have to feed the strap tiny bits at a time to adjust them, but I guess this is a set and forget kinda thing so if they skimped on that to put quality elsewhere I'm happy they did it. Only have a few days in these because I've been wet wading all summer, but performed exceptionally on a chilly rainy day on the tailwater of the Frying Pan river.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Day In, Day Out Excellence. The updated Rio Gallegos Waders are the kind of product any angler will appreciate. Out of the box, the craftsmanship and attention to design detail is apparent. Specifically, the seams are on the money: both in terms of location and quality. The increased storage area in the chest front and streamlined handwarmer pouch is also a great change. I personally love the daisy chain and drop pouches located on the inside of the waders...thoughtful touch. As for fit, the previous model was a bit on the baggy side, whereas these are a much cleaner cut that still rides comfortable and can high step a fence without splitting. The cut to the bootie is also better, as it fits cleanly into the boot. I do recommend the Foot Tractor boot, as the sizing specs and little details (e.g the gravel guard lace clip) were designed as a complete system. They've been awesome this season, and are clearly built to last many. I highly recommend the Rio Gallegos.
