There are lineups and then there are lineups; the new Wavefarer® Engineered Board Shorts add a more refined touch to a tried-and-true design. A version of the classic Wavefarers with fully matched front, back and side stripes and prints, they’re bombproof surf trunks that will see you through years of full-on use. Made of a quick-drying 3.9-oz Supplex® nylon (38% recycled) with 50+ UPF sun protection and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish, they have a natural fit and 3-piece, self-lined waistband that contours to the hip. The forward inseam helps eliminate chafing in the water, and the flat-lying fly with single rubber button is optimized for comfort while paddling. The closure is a bartacked ladderlock drawstring for security and durability; the self-draining thigh pocket has a noncorroding plastic zipper, internal key loop and added zipper pull for ease of use. Outseam is 21".

UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the water Worth the price for a durable pair of shorts. Super light and well made.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A little too tight I have to preface this by saying I love Patagonia products and have tons of clothes and luggage that I love. I have a couple of regular Wavefarer board shorts that I wear all the time but ordered these because they were on sale and I wanted a new color. However, the "engineered fit" equated to a wedgie for me. I'm about 6'1" and 175, and have a smallish posterior, but these were definitely snug and I had to send them back.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fit is Too Small I recently bought a pair of these shorts with a 34" waist and they are just too small. I had to shimmy into them and they sit ~1" higher on my waist than they should. As others have mentioned you may consider sizing up. Even with a size bigger than normal I fear these might still be too slim for my taste/use. For reference: I typically wear shorts/pants with a 33" waist. Sometimes I'm a 34" and once in a while I'm a 32" waist. Never - until now - have I had to return a 34" because it was too *small*. If it helps anybody I'm 6'1" and 175lbs. My other Patagonia stuff: Quandary pants 34" waist fits perfect. Casual shorts 33" waist fits perfect. Needless to say I'm a little bummed. The shorts do look great so I'm disappointed to have to send them back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Workhorse Trunks Received a pair of these trunks as a freebie at an event a few months back. Not sure what makes them "engineered" compared to the non-engineered Wavefarer trunks, but so far I like 'em. The fabric is durable, soft after a couple of wears/washings, and dries quickly. The drawstring and button fly closure works great and I have no complaints with the placement, size or operation of the zip pocket. I like the new slimmer fit, although I did have to go up one size to not be too tight through the butt and thighs. Anyway, I find myself oftentimes reaching for these trunks over my other older pairs, so I reckon they're working well for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great, but... I've been getting one or two pairs for a while now and the fit was way more comfortable before they went to the "trimmer silhouette". I surf in these, but also play beach volleyball in them and find myself grabbing the older boardies as the fit is slightly less restrictive. I'm not sure why Patagonia decided to alter the fit of these -- catering to the Mollusk crowd, perhaps? -- but I prefer the previous cut. Maybe sizing up will help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works for Teenage Son Bought these for teen age son. They are the only swim shorts he will now wear. They look so much cooler than other brands of board shorts. Well-made and true to size in a 32. They are actually soft after washing.
