Named for the small Northern California town where you can tuck away and rediscover yourself on the rugged Lost Coast. Our largest top-loading backpack, the Petrolia has a zippered-entry design for easy access to your gear and enough room inside to hold all the goods for a full day on the trail. A dedicated side-access laptop pocket, raised above the bottom of the pack to protect your electronics, allows you to keep your 15" or smaller machine inside the pack as you pass through security; it also doubles as a hydration pocket when you’re traversing open country. The large main compartment holds bulkier items like a harness, shoes and a rain shell and has an internal organizational panel to ferry your small essentials securely. A zippered stash pocket on the lid keeps a map or phone within reach, and two stretch-woven side pockets carry water bottles or your hat and gloves. Breathable airflow mesh shoulder straps and back panel provide cool, all-day comfort under heavy loads. A front stretch-mesh pocket expands to hold a sweater or a damp towel after your afternoon of skinny-dipping in Tuolumne. Made from 450-denier recycled polyester plain weave, with a 450-denier recycled polyester ripstop bottom. The lining is 200-denier 100% polyester. All fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Petrolia Pack 28L is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Travel Pack! I lead student tours to Europe each summer and my family owns 3 of these and use them for our yearly tours. We use it as our carry on personal item for flights. It fits a ton of stuff and the pockets- wow! They're everywhere! The top zip pocket is perfect for cellphone and other small items. The inside is one big cavity and not divided- allowing you to pack more stuff. Fits easily under the airplane seat. I reccommend this pack to all my student travelers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wide Use I use this to go to class, climbing, swimming and just about everything. The top loader is nice because no mater what volume of gear I'm carrying, I can tighten it down the sides and get the smallest fit so the pack feels less like its there. Great quality, great look. Will use for a long while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great support, space, and quality!! My favorite I spent about two nights reading reviews, debating about the Refugio, this pack, and a few others, and kept finding mixed messages about chest straps breaking on certain Patagonia packs, or about things being hit or miss. On here and on other online sources, there are less reviews for this particular pack, but it felt like the right choice (and it was!!!). I've now had this pack for over 1.5 months, and I absolutely love it as much as the first day! Nothing has broken, but perhaps if you are super rough with snapping the belts or rushing as you put it on, you may cause damage? They are strong, but I don't know why some people have had that issue. Respect the pack, and it respects you. :) This holds a ton of things! I got it for three reasons: being a college student with books and a laptop, being a dancer and theatre student with the need to carry a lot of shoes, clothes, food, binders for auditions, and also being a hiker and yoga teacher who has experienced back and shoulder pain from low quality backpacks. This one has excellent padding and really supports the whole torso when tightening the regular straps and adding the waist belt and chest strap to balance the weight (awesome!). If I have really sweaty clothes, I put them in the mesh pocket on the front of the pack. The top pocket is where I put keys, hand sanitizer, anything easy access (my favorite pocket), and the double water bottle holders on the sides are great for holding a thermos and regular bottle. The compression straps help keep the bottles in place when moving a lot. Thus far it has served as a great carry on for planes, it's kept pretty dry through the rain, and it's been comfortable commuting via bike, as well as treking around New York subways, streets, and parks (it's held some of my groceries too!). Overall, buying this is a worthwhile investment in an excellent and versatile pack. I rock the yurt yellow color with a yellow beanie all day long. :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Trusty Companion I love this pack! Purchased a year ago and has been through hiking, beach trips, daily commute on buses, and through many airports - and still looks cute. Perfect for flight carryon, and versatile size for everyday school and work needs. Especially handy for holding unwanted winter layers on top of my textbooks. Only complaint is that in heavy rainfall if not filled to capacity the top panel creates a nice pool for collecting water. Need to secure items in top pocket in water resistant pouch to prevent them from getting wet. Laptop area seems to be still dry, but because of the pool some water did get to my books.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved the 2016 version...hate the 2017 colors I bought this pack (I have a fire hydrant red one) initially to travel to Vietnam. It was great. The big compartment did it's job. I love having the small top compartment to put keys, cell phones, passport easy to reach when in the airport. I have used the pack in Southern France, Panama, Iceland. I wish the pack was bigger to hold a pair of shoes. I would not purchase another Petrolia pack because the colors that Patagonia has put out for 2017 are absolutely ugly. Please bring back the solid colors!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Difficult to open/close I just returned this pack because i found the latch on the expandable outside pocket really difficult to open and close. On the positive side, the materials and overall shape of this pack are well-designed and super functional. This is just a small complaint on an otherwise really nice pack.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cheap sternum straps Love the bag, the size and the storage options. Was one of my favorites. The sternum straps are incredibly cheaply made and attached poorly. Broke after a handful of uses. Wouldn't recommend for serious hikers or if you're going to use the straps at all.
