The problem is that you never see it coming on the Diamond. One moment you’re climbing dauntingly steep granite at 13,000 feet. The next you’re staring at sinister clouds roiling over the summit. Seconds later, lightning cracks. The Alpine Houdini® keeps you dry with an H2No® Performance Standard fabric that combines a waterproof membrane, an ultralight 100% nylon ripstop shell and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. It’s emergency rainwear for climbing that also blocks wind and traps your heat on chilly belay ledges, packs into a single chest pocket (now on the exterior of the jacket, with clip-in loop), and seals up with elastic wrist cuffs and a single-pull drawcord waist. With helmet-compatible, single-pull adjustable hood.
  • Ultralight 2.5-layer waterproof/breathable H2No® Performance Standard shell fabric
  • Coated, watertight center-front zipper has minimal interior storm flap; taped seams throughout entire garment
  • Alpine helmet–compatible hood with laminated visor and single-pull adjustment rolls down and stows with a simplified cord-and-hook design
  • Exterior left-chest pocket with coated, watertight zipper doubles as self-stuff pouch with streamlined shape and carabiner clip-in loop
  • Elasticized cuffs and a minimal single-pull adjustable drawcord hem seal out weather
  • H2No® Performance Standard shell: 2.5-layer, 1.9-oz 30-denier 100% nylon ripstop with a waterproof/breathable barrier and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Fabric is certified as bluesign® approved

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super light! Very lightweight, great at blocking wind. I got the purple/blue color. I was between a small and xsmall as my normal small is a bit loose. I went with the small so I could fit jackets under, although the xsmall was definitely more flattering. I also wish it had hand pockets, although that would add weight. Not sure why alpine jacket is twice price of regular as I did not try the regular.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flattering fit and functional too I was looking for a breathable rain shell and the Alpine Houdini has exceeded my expectations with the fit, I wasn't expecting such a flattering fit with something I will mostly wear on the trail. There is plenty of room to wear a down jacket underneath, which I did during one rain storm. I'm not surprised by the quality construction, it's a given with Patagonia clothing. I have worn it 3 times in heavy rain and it never failed to keep me completely dry. I also like that it's long enough, hits high thigh, for my long torso.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love it super light, definitely blocks out the wind. I never used it in a downpour, but kept me completely dry in a light rain. used it on long day hikes in Glacier national park where the weather from the start of the hike to the end changes dramatically. So glad I had this jacket. And i love the color. Would definitely buy again. i am 5'2", 105 lbs and bought the XS, fits perfect with or without fleece underneath.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for hiking but not for running! I'm a runner and I originally got this for running (I saw the promotional video that a girl is running wearing this jacket and that looked like a great jacket for running!). I've owned this jacket for over a year now and the problem is that I sweat so much when I run wearing this jacket that I'm as wet wearing it (from sweating because it makes me so hot) as running without it! That being said when I'm hiking or traveling this jacket has come in super handy because it's so light and weatherproof!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for the great white north I've had the alpine houdini for over a year now. I've worn it lots when the weather turns a bit foul. However, I'm really impressed with the waterproofness of the pocket, in particular. It had just been through the wash and hung to dry, I put it in my bag to go for a run later, meanwhile I was looking for my iPod shuffle. Couldn't find it anywhere. My stomach gave a little flip when I realized that it had been washed with the jacket. Sigh... oh well, I thought it was a goner. I tried to fire it up and to my great surprise and relief, it still worked! Thanks to the DWR fabric and the little zipper, it saved me buying a new iPod shuffle! Thanks, Patagonia! You rock, literally!
