Organic Cotton

In 1996, with an increased awareness of the dangers of pesticide use and synthetic fertilizers in growing conventional cotton, we began the exclusive use of organically grown cotton in all of our cotton products.

The quality of organic cotton is equal to or better than conventionally grown cotton, yet organically grown methods support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems, improve the quality of soil and often use less water. Growing organically takes more time, requires more knowledge and skill, and, for now, costs more. But it’s worth it.

To ensure we are buying cotton that is organic as defined by the USDA’s National Organic Program, we require numerous certificates issued by an accredited third-party certification body for every step of the supply chain, from farm to factories.

Hemp is an alternative natural fiber that’s cultivated with low impact on the environment. It requires no irrigation, uses no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and is harvested and processed by hand. It’s one of the most durable natural fibers on the planet, and results in a fabric with a wonderful drape, comparable to linen.

Unfortunately, industrial hemp is illegal to grow in most parts of the world because government agencies continue to associate it with marijuana. We currently import our high-quality hemp from China, and continue to hope that it might someday grow freely again.

Patagonia makes garments with hemp alone or blended with other fibers like recycled polyester, organic cotton and spandex.

Women's Island Hemp Pants- Long is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent travel pants I bought the navy earlier in the summer and had to buy the other colors! They always look presentable even after traveling and washing with out ironing - I threw out my linen pants (always wrinkled after one hour of wearing) to have these instead. I had to buy the long and shorten them because they were sold out in other sizes and worth the trouble!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pants, but run small! I was so excited to purchase these pants for my vacation. Being a size Small in most things Patagonia, and 4/6 other brands, I ordered these in size 6/tall (I'm 5'9"/135lbs). The length was good, but unfortunately, in the waist/hip they were so small, I was barely able to get them on, let alone button up... Now they have to go back, and I have to wait weeks to get a larger size. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favorite Summer Pants I purchased this pant several years ago in a fatigue- green. At that time, Patagonia was not making them in a longer length. Thanks for designing a longer length for those of us who are slightly taller. Also, I am usually a 10 and had to order a 12 which wasn't a problem. Congratulations, Patagonia! These are my favorite summer pants for travel and everyday wear. BTW- Please bring back the fatigue-like green next year. Thank you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Island Hemp Pants These are great pants that wash and dry well (in the dryer too!) I am 5 ft. 7 inches and the 34 length is more like a 32. They will shrink about a half inch after 2 washings and dryings. I bought a size 2. For reference I am about 118 pounds. The drawstring waist is a nice touch as well as the side pockets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go-to pants These pants are comfortable above all else, but they look sharp and totally fill a gap in the wardrobe. Throw these on with a v-neck and sandals and you're ready for a walk about town, a mid-day cafe break, an early-evening cocktail, or sunset on the beach. They're kind-of like a pair of pajama pants that you can wear in public, only everyone thinks you're wearing linen. They wash well, and the wrinkles are totally workable if you just slap them out on the line to dry. The pockets are some of my favorite too -- they don't pooch out in all the wrong places. I wear these when I'm photographing events too ... don't ask me how they pull off "professional" given how comfy they are, but they do!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible and conformable These pants are so soft and comfortable! I am 5'7", and my next one, I will order 34" inseam instead of 32" because I like really long pants. The longer you keep them on, the better they feel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very small The size chart puts me in a 10, I'm an 8 in the quandary pant. I'm debating whether to actually order the 12 in these, as the 10 is still too tight. The rise is very low, more of a problem because I'm taller, perhaps. Very nice quality and fabric weight, if you can get them to fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome summer pants! LOVE these pants! Lightweight and very airy for warm/hot weather wear, they are comfy and flattering. They run a whole size small in my opinion, so order up. (For example, I wear a 6 in the Stretch All-Wear Shorts 8" and in these pants I had to get a size 8 for the same fit - I couldn't even button the size 6!). For reference, I am 5'10", 140-ish lbs, 34-27-37. I snapped up the 34" Tall version while still available although to be honest they could have been longer (so I let out the hem 1 inch since I sew and now they are perfect!).
