When dodgy mountain weather grinds your pace down to stop and go, these soft and stretchy bottoms provide the warmth you need to stay put, combined with the breathability and technical performance needed for moving along. We make all our Merino Air® baselayers from a blend of merino wool sourced from the grasslands of Patagonia (51%) and recycled polyester (49%). We spin the wool fibers with an innovative technology that creates a loftier yarn with a superior warmth-to-weight ratio. The lofted wool and recycled polyester yarns are then knit directly into a seamless garment with minimal waste. The result is a baselayer with superior performance qualities; it offers a stretchy, chafe-free fit, lightweight warmth, exceptional breathability and the natural odor-fighting properties of wool.
  • Fine merino wool from the grasslands of Patagonia blended with Capilene® recycled polyester for improved wicking, durability and dry time
  • 18.9 micron-gauge yarn; lofted wool innovation
  • Fabric is soft against skin and stretches to move with the body
  • Seamless 3D construction eliminates chafe points through the entire garment and has almost no wasted material
  • Comfortable wide waistband made with integrated seamless elastic
  • 5.6-oz (190-g) 51% chlorine-free merino wool/49% recycled polyester seamless zigzag knit
  • 138 g (4.9 oz)
  • Made in Hong Kong.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Women's Merino Air Bottoms is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fit and Feel Fabulous, but are a bit Fragile! I've had these for about two months now. The fabric is amazingly soft and warm, and they form fit to the body very comfortably. I have two issues with them however. One, they do become a bit baggy after wearing them for a day, so you have to wash and dry them to get them to form fit again. A bigger issue is that the fabric is very fragile. Around the house, I have a tendency to wear them sans pants, and I've already had to repair three holes. A fire place spark made one hole, but I'm not sure about the other two - possibly my Australian Cattle Dog who likes to jump in my lap on the couch. I would recommend them, but I would also caution buyers to always wear them as an under layer as they can be damaged more easily than you'd expect from a Patagonia garment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely warm, soft and oh so light. Love these. My go to for skiiing and regardless of below zero temps it's the only thing I need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent layer These leggings are fantastic for all varieties of activity where you want to keep your muscles warm without too much bulk. They are very comfortable even during extended wear. I've even used them as a base layer under jeans when traveling and going to sporting events. I'm 5'8" and ~123 lbs. I ordered the small; the length was just above the ankles and the waistline perfect. The leggings did stretch out width-wise a noticeable amount, but as long as you're not planning to put them under skin tight pants, it's not a problem. After laundering (which is very easy) the shape is once again form-fitting.
