bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Women's R1 P/O is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Previous design was better This style is great for adjusting for more or less warmth. But the asymmetrical pocket is odd -- and who's going to put something in a pocket over her breast? And the seam for the pocket is at the bustling -- awkward. The previous R1 design was much sleeker without the pocket and awkward seam line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A dozen years later I purchased my R1 in 2003. It is STILL my number 1 winter layer for running in New England winters. It breathes just the right amount and even when raining/snowing, I never feel soaked. I'm looking to upgrade to a new color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect for active winter fun I purchased this R1 in size medium a year ago and it is my go-to base layer for active pursuits in cold Vermont winter weather: backcountry skiing, winter hiking, running, lugging a baby in a backpack around, and steelhead fishing. It's almost perfect with a soft shell for ski touring and running-- dumps heat and doesn't feel wet even when I'm really sweating. I love the length of the zipper-- also allows the shirt to dump even more heat when you don't want to stop moving and it's also juuuuust long enough for me to nurse my baby when we're out without having to pull my shirt way up. Clutch mom move, Patagonia. The longer length seems meant for winter, too-- no gapping when bending over if tucked in. If untucked, there's just enough material to hang below my shell (size medium). I love this because it means it doesn't ride up with a backpack on. The sleeves are long enough to extend just past my shell, too, but this has never been an issue. Chest pocket on the medium holds an iPhone 6 in a ziplock bag. My one complaint is how tight the neck fits when the zipper is up all the way. I don't think I have a particularly thick neck, but..? The rest of the shirt has plenty of freedom of movement. I've noticed a little pilling mentioned in other reviews-- yes, different than previous versions, but not really that noticeable. For reference, 5'3, 140# athletic build with longer torso and average shoulders. B/C chest. Typically wear size 4/6. There's plenty of room to move as a base layer, and it layers under a medium Patagonia soft shell just right. Patagonia: please keep offering colors women can catch fish in. We don't need to be neon or purple to look like women!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Runs small I love the fabric and the color, but the cut makes it feel very tight and not very comfortable. Was going to wear for skiing but don't think it will be comfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm! I love my R1s. For me, they fit true to size. I'm not a fan of bulky, but certainly not a fan of a tight fit. The R1 is perfect for cold ski days under a vest and/or jacket and perfect for the spring days on it's own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing layering piece I have the hoody R1 as well and I loved it so much I bought this one too. It's a great layering piece that I reach for time and time again. During summer climbing trips it's perfect for keeping warm at camp. As the temperature drops I wear it climbing. It's the perfect layering piece for climbing because it keeps me warm (and I'm always cold) and it breathable, but if I need to take it off I can keep my helmet on and easily pull this off, which is great on long multi pitch climbs with varying conditions. I like to layer my Houdini over this when it really windy, together it's a great combo. Stoke is high!
