To save weight for the route, you might jettison the stove, the number 4 cam and the summit candy bar, but you’ll never leave behind the R2® Jacket. For northern latitudes, frigid starts and cold weather, the highly refined construction and fabric of this Regulator® fleece traps heat and breathes freely to keep you warm and comfortable across a wide range of conditions. The main body relies on high-loft Polartec® Thermal Pro® recycled polyester fabric, which is superlight, wicking, compressible, stretchy and soft. R1® Polartec Power Grid™ high/low grid panels wrap each cuff, and run along the underside of the arms and down the sides to improve fit, mobility and comfort range. The cuff’s spiral-stitch construction won’t constrict your forearms when you push up the sleeves; the softly lined inner collar and kissing-welt zipper garage go easy on the neck and chin; Sonic/Stitch seam construction on all zippers reduces bulk; offset shoulder seams stay clear of pack straps; zippers close the external pockets (one chest and two handwarmers, above harness line), while the handwarmers’ pocket bags double as stealthy internal mesh drop-in pockets.
  • Exceptionally warm, directionally knit Polartec® Thermal Pro® fabric is breathable, compressible, wicks moisture and dries quickly
  • Side panels, sleeves and cuffs feature R1® Polartec® Power Grid™ for improved fit and breathability
  • Technical fit, underarm gussets and raglan sleeves for increased mobility and comfort under outerwear and packs
  • All zippers have Sonic/Stitch seam construction to reduce bulk and improve suppleness; soft kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
  • Spiral-seam construction at cuff allows sleeves to push up easily without constricting forearms
  • One left-chest pocket and two high handwarmer pockets have slim zips, clean-finished zipper garages, and are harness- and pack-compatible; two interior drop-in mesh pockets
  • Body: 6.1-oz Polartec® Thermal Pro® 97% polyester (63% recycled)/3% spandex. Side panels and cuffs: 6.3-oz Polartec® Power Grid™ 93% recycled polyester/7% spandex. Fabric is bluesign® approved

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite article of clothing Love this fleece! Great for indoors and outdoors which is what I wanted. Most of my base layers are pullover, and as a new mom on maternity leave I really wanted a full zip for easier on / off that would work both inside on cold days but also when I need to run out (layered under my nano puff in the winter). It's SO soft, the baby loves it too. I'm 5' 4", 120lbs and the small fits perfectly for me - I'm sure the XS would fit as well with a tighter fit but I can layer this easily over another shirt and like that its a bit looser for everyday casual wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits perfectly under a parka! This jacket is great alone and fits perfectly under a parka - without any weird bulking. It is lightly shaped - curves in around the waist and out around the hips- without being clingy. Not at all boxy. The fleece around the neck is really soft and cozy. I have always been interested in the R2 jacket- the beautiful harvest moon blue and the excellent fit made this year's model a keeper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compressible, warm, durable, good fit I take this backpacking and wear it for casual dress at work. It compresses well and withstands abuse. It's one of my favorite Patagonia items because (in black) the logo is pretty surreptitious. It fits well too. I'm 5'4", 110 lbs, and the XS works. I'm slightly curvy down below (36" hips, 24" waist), and don't like fleeces that stop short or ride up. This one doesn't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stylish for my 15 year old, but tough as always I bought this for my daughter, it runs a little snug so we had to go one size up. Very stylish for her, Patagonia tough for me. It should last for years like all my Patagonia clothing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite top to wear This jacket has great versitility-as a first layer, mid or outer layer depending on activity. The fleece feels like the fur of my kitty. I like the fitted cut much better than past versions. I am 5'6" about 118 and the small is perfect most of the time. I actually got the medium too-wasn't sure what size I'd be-and kept them both as the two together are great for layering.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super warmth and cute too I was heartbroken last year when my trusty 11-year-old R2 jacket disappeared after my first hike with my baby. (Blame it on mommy brain.) I loved that thing and wore it every day fall through spring, and on mountain hikes in the summer. I couldn't for the life of me remember what size it was, so I ordered large in this since that's usually what I wear. I should have paid more attention to the slim fit. The large fits, but is definitely snug, and my old R2 from 2005 was roomy and fit like a glove. The sleeves can't really be rolled up above my wrists, which will be inconvenient when hiking and sweating. The new model still has the same powerful warmth and the material is softer. The color is beautiful!
