Vertical Knits, Mexico

Fair Trade premium used for propane stoves and bicycles

When some 1,500 workers at the Vertical Knits factory in Mexico received their Fair Trade premiums, they voted to use the money, and their group purchasing power, to buy propane stoves and bicycles at a discount. The workers could then choose to receive one item or the other, opting either to improve their home lives or avail themselves of a new means of transport. In order to distribute the stoves to workers’ homes, factory management and the factory’s Fair Trade committee coordinated a complex system of drop-off points throughout the region. Their efforts were featured on a local news show.
