You were hoping last night’s storm would freshen up the conditions, but instead you’re greeted with a mix of not-quite boilerplate and a topping of wind scour to keep the day spicy. When you need to make the best of any backcountry situation, forge ahead with the Descensionist Pants. We built these pants for unlimited kinetics in the backcountry’s ever-changing conditions. They’re our most breathable weatherproof shells, made of a supersoft, 50-denier plain weave fabric with mechanical stretch to keep you in motion throughout the day; a DWR (durable water repellent) finish protects the fabric from saturation due to sloppy snow or hours of postholing. The soft, moisture-wicking interior glides over underlayers and moves moisture when your body is breathing from the inside out. Articulated patterning throughout the pants combined with the stretch of the fabric allows exceptional mobility for off-balance climbs and descents. Mesh-lined thigh vents with watertight, coated zippers keep air moving freely to reduce heat buildup; internal gaiters provide a tenacious seal even when you’re postholing. At the waist, a soft, self-fabric lining adds all-day skin comfort and repels moisture to keep you dry. The internal belt (and belt loops) hold your pants where you want them, while a two-snap closure, a zip fly and a webbing loop on the rear yoke (connects to the powder skirt on any Patagonia® Snow jacket) complete the waist details. Other features include tough scuff guards, slim zip installation to reduce weight and bulk, two front pockets, two large thigh pockets and an embedded RECCO® avalanche rescue reflector.
  • 3-layer hard shell delivers exceptional stretch, unprecedented breathability and a moisture-managing knit backer
  • Waist details: soft self-fabric lining repels moisture; grown-on belt loops and built-in belt; two-snap closure and zip fly; webbing loop on rear yoke attaches pants to the powder skirt on any Patagonia® Snow jacket

  • Articulated patterning complements generous stretch for exceptional mobility while stepping or sliding

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comments on fit Just some comments on fit...I’m 6’, 190 pounds, 35-36” waist. Pretty muscular in the butt and thighs. I’m almost always a size L in pants. I ordered the size M and L. The L fit well in the waist and butt but was extremely baggy elsewhere. I definitely don’t like the slim euro type fit, but these were too baggy for me. The pant cuffs almost made my size 29.0 TLT6s disappear! The size M was not surprisingly too tight in the thighs and butt. If you’re on the fence with size, you might size down - but the cut of these are definitely baggier than many backcountry oriented pants - for example the OR Trailbreaker or BD Recon and Dawn Patrol pants. I was bummed because otherwise the fabric seems super nice, very soft and stretchy for a hard shell. There’s stretch mesh cell phone pocket that would fit a small beacon tightly (Pulse or Tracker 3) but was too tight for my Pieps - I could get it in there but it was pretty tough. There’s no beacon leash clip as I don’t think it was intended for this purpose. The gaiterless cuff design seemed ok but hard to comment without actually using the pant.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Just missing one important feature This would be the best backcountry pant on the market except it is missing one essential feature. It needs the same grippy powder cuff as the other Patagonia ski pants. With this Descensionist pant, I frequently get snow in my boots when I am off my skis because the cuff doesn't cinch down enough to keep the snow out. As an outdoor professional, I dig a lot of snow pits. I can't have snow in my boots each time.
