If we have any hope of a thriving planet—much less a business—it is going to take all of us doing what we can with the resources we have. This is what we can do.
Bought my first one in mid-nineties, second one in mid- 2000's, and now on my third in 2023. Still wear the first two; their longevity is unbelievable. Didn't really "need" another, but wanted a new one.
I own 2 other, and similar Patagonia vests, but different colors. They are my basic winter uniform for sports (skiing, running) and general outdoor activities. They fit great, and allow me to wear lighter winter clothing because of their incredible warmth and comfort, even on days the temperatures are a warmer.
This thing is awesome. It fits well, not too snug, and keeps my core warm. It can work as an over for a little walk outside in the cold down to ~15deg F, and has huge pockets for my hands and other gear. It looks stylish and will serve me well I hope for years to come!
I wanted to purchase a vest for warmer weather use. Love the warmth and stretch on this vest. Deep pockets keep your valuables safe and hands warm if needed. The front zippered pocket is very handy. Overall great vest to purchase if in the market for one.
I usually wear this over shirt or lightweight sweater and it is warm enough for the low 50F temperature with occasional wind. It is also a really warm layer in colder months.
Soft, warm, and likely to be joining me on outdoor adventures for a decade+ to come. I love this vest, its quality craftsmanship, and knowing that Patagonia stands by its products. The fit is perfect (a comfortable medium) and the color way (pitch blue) is great to boot. Highly recommended.
Overall the material used for this vest is simply scratchy especially when zipped up with the collar at ones neck and cheek region . Made to be a snug fitting vest but unfortunately zipped up is uncomfortable. Styling is impeccable.
You seem to be fashioning clothing for very small men!
Your models are 61 and 150 pounds wearing a medium!
The average man in America is 5 ft 9 inches and 197.5 pounds and I assure you he isnt wearing a medium!
Thank you for sharing this feedback, Steven; we are passing it along to the appropriate teams. We're sorry this vest didn't fit, and glad to see you've returned something you weren't going to be happy with. Please let us know if we can help you find a better option!

Vibin' with the Vest
I'm really happy with the vest. It is functional and keeps me warm, and is also really good looking. I receive compliments every time I wear it. I'd buy again (but likely will not have to since Patagonia gear lasts forever)!
Great replacement for an older fleece vest. A little stiff at first. Lining is thick which also makes for a slim fit. West it daily throughout the day at work due to cooler temp
Runs small. I'm 5'9 ,180lbs and medium size was super tight. Exchanged for large and it fits perfectly. Exchange process was easy. Fast turn around time. Comfy and cozy! Great underlayer for extreme cold or top layer for les fridged climes. Durable build.
I have owned 3 of these over the course of the last 15 years. Absolutely essential part of my active and casual wardrobe. Warm, tough, layerable. What else can I say? Essential.

This vest runs small, actually tight compared to everything else in medium. I believe because of the lining. Very stiff throughout especially the collar. Not the biggest fan so far.

Awesome vest! Good fit and warm
The vest is wind-resistant and warm. Although some people claim the material is stiff, I personally think it's fine and does its job because you cannot have both soft-feeling and wind-resistant clothing, right? For me, 5'10'' and 158 lbs, it fits well with a size S. It's not as bulky as I expected. Instead, the thickness is... Read More good enough to allow you to put on your coat outside in winter.
Hi Ben, thank you for sharing this review! You're right about the windproof membrane; that's what leads to that stiffer feeling. We're so happy you're pleased with this vest!
I have the Retro X Jacket which is amazingly warm and windproof. The arms are very loose fit. The vest is a regular fit - wish they made the entire jacket that way. Will fit nicely under a shell or on its own.
My previous vest had undersized zippers that were hard to operate and failed often. The main zipper had to be replaced two times at the Patagonia store. The current model has beefier zippers that look like they'll last.
Beyond that, I love the vest and wear it all winter when I'm working outdoors on my (small) ranch.
If you ever questioned on whether or not this was a solid purchase, have no fear. Multiple women have tried to buy this off me and upon refusal, steal it in the dead of night. This cream-purple combo is a lady killer and will have all the women on the mountain jealous of your patagucci DRIP. 10/10, will buy again when its stolen
I have had different versions of retro-x vest over the years, and I think this is the best version thus far. My go to gear for the New England weather.
Im usually M on all my patagonia clothes but in this case runs way too tight, Unfortunately i have to travel to another country so i cant return it.
Buy a size larger.

Super warm!!
It was a gift for my husband and he loves ittt! Super warm, light weight and cute absolutely recommend this vest
I am not a big guy, 59 and 165. I had to return a Medium because it fit like a corset and I couldn zip it up. The sizing is awful and a shame because this is a fantastic garment. I wore my last one for 15 years but the sizing since has been terrible. M too small and L too large. Typical with Patagonias erratic sizing.
We are so sorry to hear about the sizing issues. We appreciate your feedback and hope to correct this issue in the future. Please feel welcome to return this vest due to sizing. If needing any assistance, please contact our [customer service]

So good I bought two
Had this vest in the past in dark green and loved it and my son loved it too. He loved it so much he ended up taking ownership. I decided I would get two this time just in case.

Warm
Love my vest, wear it everyday when the weather is right!
Don't pay attention to the fit description. I did and eventually bought the wrong size therefore missing out on the deal as the next size up was sold out...bummer. I'm 5'11...175lbs. Sizing according to the model was a M(model was 6'1 wearing a M). I had the L in my bag and swapped it out. My loss. Buy ones true size. Never got ... Read Moreto use it but the quality and function appears to be excellent
The liner makes this thing impenetrable. So warm. I first got the M and it was too tight in my arm pits so I got the L and it is a little long for me so it kind of clumps up a bit. My body type is never perfect for Patagonia. 5'10 180. But I love this vest and will have it forever even if it does not fit perfectly.
Nice and warm , I wasnt pleasantly surprised it had a sort athletic lining . I mainly bought it to match my sons jacket , but now I love it and everyone at work gives me compliments
This vest is much better than a similar vest that Ive had for several years. Specifically, the zippers on that vest are undersized. Ive had to take it into a Patagonia store twice to have the zipper worked on. This new vest looks to have solved that issue. Time will tell. For the moment it seems fine and I have no complaints.
this is the third one of these I own. All are still working great. I like the added tabs on the zippers for gloved hands. the retro vests and jackets are remarkably wind resistant and I find them to be a perfect "in between" season item as well as a layer for colder days.
Bought this on representation that Patagonia would take a return of my old Patagonia vest. Sent it in. Got useless notice that I was getting nothing and no explanation as to why. Not typical of Patagonia customer service. Extremely disappointed.
Great, light vest. The windstopper membrane is a nice feature. I live in the South so its not as cold but this vest provides good enough warmth to wear in low 40 degree weather over a long sleeve shirt or a hoodie underneath. Great look to it, as well. Sadly, I had to return this vest, but only because it was too warm for where I live. This vest is super cozy, undeniably well built, looks amazing, and, of course, super warm.

Read More vest is too warm in the winter, it's not going to get much use. If you live in the northern half of the US, or you run cold, this vest will be perfect for you. Hi Jason, sorry to hear that the Men's Classic Retro-X Fleece Vest was a bit too warm. We recommend checking out the [Nano Puff Vest](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html). It's warm enough for colder southern California days and nights and light enough so you don’t overheat. It might be just what you're looking for!

Weird fit and material
For reference, Im 58 140lbs. I own the down jacket in a size S and it fits great; i wear it almost every day. I purchased this vest in a size S because it was on sale. It fit very tight and the fabric was very stiff and crinkly like other reviews have stated. The collar was an awkward height and it was also very stiff. It was not comfortable at all... Read More. This didnt fit anything like my other Patagonia items, and I had to return it. If you purchase this, definitely size up.
I own more patagonia than most. I love so much of their stuff including the synchilla and better sweater. Sadly the retro-x has one major flaw. If you have more than a two day old beard it catches on the collar almost every turn of the head. It is of course wonderful patagonia quality in every other way.
The wind resistant liner improves the garment's warmth.
I had to break in this garment. The vest is form-fitting and a bit snug in the upper chest area until I wore it awhile. Then the fit was great. The right collar failed to lay down flat until I broke in the collar, too. Never had a garment require this before. That said, recommend the item.
I bought this type of vest from L.L.Bean, in el and swam in it , I returned it and got a lg and it was too tight, sent it back , got one from you and fits much better but still just a smidge tight in xl.
Thank you for sharing this review, Marc! We’re sorry to hear that vest isn’t comfortable for you. It may be the windproof liner you’re feeling, which may make it feel more stiff. Please know you are always welcome to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) anything that doesn’t work out for you. You might like to check out the Classic Synchillla Vest or the Better Sweater Vest, which don’t have that membrane and might feel softer.

Snug and warm
I enjoy the rust color. It matches my daughters goldendoddle
Great vest! To be honest, if I was a more skinny type, I would go with M... otherwise I am kind of muscle bulky; usually I wear L, here navy blue L fits perfectly. Tried also white L, and TBH it seemed to be a bit larger. Definitely I would not go with XL unless you cozy a snowman look. Vest definitely has a sharp sporty cut. Love the more durable ... Read Morehigh collar and wind breaker is fantastic. Nothing to complain about, but your chest will stay warm compared to your arms if you just wear tshirt. Loving it, thanks Patagonia!
My boyfriend absolutely loved this as a christmas gift. The large was not big enough to layer, so we exchanged for an XL. However, the vest is amazing, and keeps him very warm!
No matter what I did, the right side of the collar would NOT lie flat. It was always sticking up into my face. Seems the material is too stiff to allow the collar to naturally lie down like a collar should.
Highly versatile product, good for work and recreation as it can be used as both an outer and midlayer piece. Stylish and warm, I look forward to using this piece in a variety of settings for many years to come!
We're sorry to hear that the fit on this one didn't work for you. The Retro-X is a regular fit design, but the fabric has no stretch to it, so you might feel more confined than other "regular" fit styles. If you haven't already returned it, we recommend reaching out to our Customer Service team for other vest suggestions, as well as [help](https://help.patagonia.com/s/) to return it!
Great fit, and comfortable for wearing as a layer, or on its own. I had the original pre-retro version of this (as a jacket) until it was passed on to friend I love the wind proof update on this vest.
I always have bought/ worn Patagonia items that are large. I did not know that this vest came with an inner lining that made the fit tight. I may get one in xl.
I own a non-fleece vest already and liked the look of the fleece one with a bit more texture and perhaps more comfy. I bought the medium since this was the size of my original purchase. The fleece vest has a hard or non-soft inner shell that was a bit rigid and as such, rubbed against my arm pit. I didn't care for it. I admit it was a bit on t... Read Morehe tight side of things but it was not comfy. I believe this more ridged inner core serves to break the wind. For me as the weekend warrior, this weather toughness, with the compromise in comfort, was what I was after.
First of all, I love Retro . Vest can be worn inside without being too warm. The fact that it combines recycled materials makes it only better! Ought to last a long time!
Have worn this vest a handful of times since I got it and it has become one of my favorite vests to wear. A lot warmer than my other fleece vests, and looks great on too. I got an XL and like the fit, enough room for me to layer a hoodie underneath. Great looking piece.
Currently, one of my favorite pieces of gear to keep warm. Collar is a bit too stiff and hoping for it to relax after some wears and washes. Generally wear a Medium with Patagonia but wanted a roomier fit to layer with a sweater.
Very comfortable and warm. As others mentioned due to the wind blocking not super breathable so would only be wearing around the 10-45 degree mark. Length was a little longer than I might like but covers you up pretty well. I own the Retro X Jacket for when things get a lot colder as well.
I read a lot of reviews saying this vest ran small. After receiving it and trying it on it seems like a standard xl fit to me. I usually buy regular (not slim) fit clothes. I look forward to wearing it this fall/winter!
Patagonia Men's Classic Retro-X® Fleece Vest Is just that, a classic. True to size. A great piece of gear that delivers warmth and comfort. Updated colors that pop. Love it.
I love the color and design, but the inner liner was a big surprise. Its this plastic not very breathable material that makes it kind of heavy. The colllar was also way higher than any other collar of similar type of vest or jacket I own. Which is odd. Love Patagonia but this was a miss for me.
Hi Asha, sorry that the liner came as a shock. The warp-knit mesh works to create a windproof barrier to help keep the chill off on cold blustery days. Decent warm vest but form fitting!
The vest is relatively warm. It's relatively warm in the cool spring nights and should be warm for autumn/winter wearing. It's good for everyday wear when it's cold(er) weather but not for exercising as it'll be too hot and heavy.
It's more form fitting than the jacket. XL fits a bit tighter but acceptable. If you want roo... Read Moreminess, then buy 1 size UP. The vest's length goes down slightly below the waist.
There's a meshlike barrier that's sewed inside the vest which provides the windproof protection. The vest is a little heavy than a regular fleece vest but it's worth it to block out the wind and for warmth. It also has a slight stretch. The handpockets have the barrier in front to help provide warmth to the hands.
The outer pocket has a small storage area for small items like cards, keys and change. There are no inner pockets.
You can wear a base layer (short/long sleeve shirt) and a lightweight fleece pullover underneath it but nothing thick as it'll be too tight as the vest is form fitting (hugs close to the body)!
The outer fleece in natural with blue ribbings and pocket is a short but soft. Hopefully, the fleece will stay soft and warm after many washings for many years to come.
Buy when it's on sale as it is expensive like most Patagonia products.
I own a retro X pile coat and bought the pile vest because I like the coat so much. The pile vest isn't a disappointment and is amazingly warm. It is my favorite vest of all that I own, bar none, including Patagonia down, Filson wool, etc. You wont go wrong with this vest. It is a winner!
I own a retro X pile coat and bought the pile vest because I like the coat so much. The pile best isnt a disappointment and is amazing. It is my favorite best bar none including down, Filson wool, etc. you wont go wrong with this fast its a winner!
Everyone in my family has at least one. These are perfect for cold weather, especially wind. Quality construction, lots of deep pockets. Love the colors.
Love Love Love this vest! Sharp looking and very warm. Normally I would of probably ordered a Large but most of the reviews I read said order up one size because Patagonia typically runs small. The XL is a perfect fit though. Highly recommend!
This vest rules. It fits great and is completely windproof, which is the main reason I bought it. I wear it XC skiing to block with the wind and I dont have to wear a shell. Its an awesome vest.
Got this on a whim and I love it. It is a typical fleece vest but it also is lined with mesh so its a little bit more substantial. The colors are beautiful and it fits well. Fits a little bit close around the armpits but that is OK.
It's a great, comfy vest. And the lining inside stops the wind nicely and gives it a clean form. I'm 5'10 / 170 lbs and originally ordered a Medium, which was a very snug fit, so I exchanged it for a Large which gives me a lot more room to move. LOVE this vest.
I had been looking at this vest for several years, and finally pulled the trigger on buying it. Ordering was easy, and shipping was very fast. I had the vest two days after I placed the order.

Read Morepossible to zip up, but it was uncomfortably tight. Think sausage casing tight. I wanted a vest, not a girdle. With other vests that I have I am able to wear a chamois shirt or even a reasonably thick sweater under the vest. That would be impossible with this item. When 90% of the garments that I wear are either a size Medium or Large, and this Large fits like compression shorts, it suggests that there is a sizing issue that Patagonia should address.
I did sent the original back The person who I spoke with was very helpful, and the exchange process went smoothly. I will hope that the XL is a better match to my physique. If not, I will revise this review or provide an updated review. Let me encourage you to heed all the other reviews that are posted as well; there are multiple reports of this vest running very small. Usually for an item sold at a premium price, and this vest certainly is very expensive for what it is, the fit is more generous. I don't know who the size models were for this one, but I would suggest that their torso is not that of a person who normally fits into a size Large without issue.
Love the look and feel of this vest. It also feels very functional, however with it still being in the 90's here in Texas haven worn it but around the house...looked great walking around the living room though. I was replacing a 20-year old vest with this one. I'm 5'11" and 215lbs and chose an XL to be able to wear a layer underneath the vest. The fit is generous, without being baggy as attached picture may show.

We loved this vest! It’s so beautifully made with subtle accents on the zipper and pockets. The quality is fantastic. The inside lining is excellent as well.

I have been rocking a Patagonia R2 windproof fleece vest for more than 15 years and got this to "replace" it as it's showing it's age. Right now I am wearing it daily to get accustomed to its warmth, but I'll probably switch between the two going forward depending on forecast - not breaking this out until it's sub-20 deg F again.
For reference, typically I am wearing a 150 weight merino base and this vest. I ride my cargo bike everywhere and depending on temperature and precip I either wear a hard shell or windproof lightly insulated soft shell as my outer layer.
