Killer lightweight protector

Love my houdini! It stows super small you can keep it anywhere,in a pocket a compartment etc.Easy to use and put on,easy to adjust. Sheds light snow and rain gives good wind protection. Perfect cool weather jacket

This is my second black Houdini jacket and I love it. It's perfect for our climate (Alabama Gulf Coast), where it can be 35 degrees one day and 70 degrees the next day. It's my go to jacket on cool days, and my Nano Puff is for cold days.

The perfect jacket

This is my 4th Houdini jacket going back to their first launch. For me, the Houdini is the perfect jacket. I originally bought it for trail running but bring it with me almost everywhere I go. It's highly breathable, but still able to ward off a gentle rain or dusting of snow. Here in Oregon the mornings can be much cooler than the afternoons,... Other lightweight wind/rain jackets I've tried are not as breathable. They tend to feel like I'm wearing a plastic bag. For all around day-to-day use for everything from casual wear to running and skate skiing, I love the Houdini's perfect mix of breathability and protection.

Best Windbreaker Ever

Hands down my BWF (best windbreaker forever). Arm length is perfect, hoodie just right and with a baseball cap and the hood up and zipped up a typhoon could not dislodge the hat. Couldn't recommend it more.

lightweight and super warm

This has been my go-to jacket for three bikepacking trips and countless runs. I usually wear small or medium and the medium fits perfectly. It's great in a light rain or windy conditions, and it keeps me toasty when I run, bike, or hike hard in weather as cold as 35 degrees. The magic is body heat--it holds it extremely well, especially with t... Read Morehe hood up and cinched--beneath my helmet if I'm biking or with a light merino wool cap beneath if I'm running. If I'm biking and it gets too warm, I can pack it into its smallest state (tucked into its own breast pocket) and latch it onto my rear rack with a carabiner. Unfortunately, I did that on a recent tour and it rubbed against my rear wheel until I wore a hole through the pocket into which it was tucked. Now I need to figure out how to repair the pocket, because while the Houdini is worth the price, it's too expensive to buy a second one.

Favorite garment, with limits (it doesn't breath or shed water)

I love how the Houdini packs down (though the pocket could be just a bit bigger, to make packing easier and prevent fabric snags). Great windbreaker and for low intensity activity adds surprising warmth, but it does not breath at all and is barely water resistant. I use it to warm up at beginning of cool weather runs, but shed it after 5-10 minutes... Read More and at that point it is wet inside. Have to hang it to dry when I get home. Gets wet within minutes in the slightest rain. Applying DWR helps some. Would try the Houdini Air, but my experience with old Nine Trails was the "breathable" panels don't really breath. Only pit zips would help.

Not sure what I was expecting

I have this jacket for over a year. I live in a colder area north of most reviews here. Winds can gust and the jacket is okay but too thin to keep any warmth. There is a very limited window in which this jacket is useful between spring/summer and summer/fall. Once it’s wet this jacket gets soaked, it isn’t as resistant as I hoped. My clothes do not... Hi Kim, we're sorry to hear that the Houdini Jacket didn't meet your expectations. Based on your review, we recommend our [Torentshell Jacket]( as a good replacement for a rain jacket. It offers great protection against wind and rain, with a waterproof shell and breathable fabric. It's also equipped with a durable water repellent finish and provides room for layering in colder weather.

Got the Houdini and wore it nearly every day during a 35-day birding expedition from southern California near the Mexico border to Olympic peninsula in Washington to Anchorage, Adak Island and St John's Island in the Bering Sea of Alaska. Was on 5-day pelagic boat trip 50 miles offshore and was able to layer up and down with the changing temperatures and wind. On Adak Island in the Aleutians and St Paul's Island in the Bering Sea, wore it as my outer jacket over a down jacket in 25+ mph winds and low 40's. Was fine in light rains. Got the patterned brown color which is a really cool camo color for chasing birds. I could see how this jacket might be too warm if running, but I never overheated even when slogging through 3 miles of heavy marsh in my Wellingtons. All in all, it's perfect for its intended use. Its unsurpassed for the avid birder.

Wind Proof / Everyday Jacket

This jacket is perfect for traveling or anywhere you'll need a light outer layer. It's windproof and folds into itself very neatly. Easy to throw into a carry on bag for chilly plane rides or into a back pack/hiking bag if you're unsure if it will be chilly/windy.

Light and a nice protective layer

I love this jacket. I own two of them. It's versatility is where it really shines. June 9, 2023

Let's talk about that tag :-/

Hi Patagonia - I have three colors of this jacket. I THOUGHT that maybe the black one I bought was faulty with the funky stand-up tag. Then I found it in a really cool black/green camo pattern in your Santa Monica store. So I had to try it...same issue. Then I found it in a really cool burnt orange color in Crested Butte at Dragon Fly Outfitter so ... Read MoreI HAD to have it. Now, I I've read many of the reviews of the Houdini and it looks as if a lot of folks have the same gripe as me. The garment tag is placed too high on the back of the neck so that is sticks up. It's unsightly and it's annoying. I'd think this would be a simple running line change that could be in place for F23. Simply stop using the nylon tag (Hey, less plastic!) and just print the P7 Logo in it's place. Doable?

Super light weight, easily pacakable

Lightweight, packable, warm

Fits my husband great, packs really small which we needed. Tested the water resistance and we approved! I ordered a light blue for myself, too see-through. Stick to dark colors so you cant see through the jacket. Unless you dont care about that.

Very good at blocking the wind and keeping one warm. My previous Houdini had a neck pouch for the hood, which made the packing size not as small. This version packs down to a very small size, making ideal for traveling and hiking.

Houdini Jacket Fit

I have been a devoted Patagonia customer since 1985 - 2-3 years ago, the Houdini Jacket went to a Slim Fit. I wear a Patagonia Large for all clothing products, except the Slim Fit. I just purchased my third iteration of the Houdini jacket, all with different designs. Read Mores perfect and there were no issues with the design other than the screen printed logo peeling off over time. This most recent design retains a similar breathability/warmth as the last Houdini, however, the design/pattern is not too great. The pocket orientation should have remained horizontal instead of vertical - the pocket tends to flap out when unzipped and occasionally gets caught in the zipper when zipping up. The inner tag behind the neck also hangs exposed and upside down unless you fully zip up the jacket. This is a design flaw that should be addressed. Makes wearing the jacket a little sloppy looking and ruins the simplicity of the design. All this being said, I will always love what the Houdini was intended for and can live with the flaws of this iteration until it wears out.

Runs small, extremely thin. I have serious doubts it will hold up to much wear. Far too expensive for what it is. Other companies sell much more substantial windbreakers in the same price range. This jacket is comparable to jackets sold at big box department stores for half the price. Save your money.

Packable and Portable

The beauty of this thing is how light and packable it is. Not good for an all day soaker but for 30 min run in the cold rain works great. Does well in the wind over an insulating layer. Handy for spring skiing when it's 40 at the base and 20 and windy up top.

Bought the jacket for a light stowable wind breaker. I have run in it several times, I like the light fabric and easiness to store, if needed. The sleeves seemed long for a small. The jacket doesn't breath as much as i anticipated and i have not tested in rain(knowing it is water resistant not water proof). Still like it and no regrets.

Pull a Houdini!

I took this Houdini windbreaker on my recent NOLA trip. It kept me dry and warm when it rained. It is a perfect jacket to travel with since it can be easily stowed away inside its built-in pocket. This is my new favorite travel jacket. A+!

Minimalist. Great.

The Houdini is super simple without any bells and whistles but it makes a great wind shell to throw in a daypack or running vest. I know its not waterproof but the DWR does a good job of causing light precipitation to bead up and roll off.

Tried and true classic

Lightweight wind protection with a full zip. It does what it needs to, and it does it well. I wear mine on trail runs over a merino long sleeve when its below freezing. It really Amps up the retained heat for such a low weight cost when ounces count. Its a staple in my backcountry pack all 4 seasons.

Light, ultra packable and versatile

This jacket is a fantastic tool for the PNW. So often you just want the wind off of you with a light breathable, non-insulating layer. This does it. However, this new one seems to collect more moisture inside during exercising on cool damp days than the last one I owned for a few years. Still dries out quick.

Almost perfect

This is one of my go-to pieces and I always keep it in my kit year round. My main problem is with the pocket, as several others here have mentioned. December 8, 2022

Poorly constructed, lacks durability

I have washed mine twice. Both washings resulted in destruction of the waist and hood cinches. I thought the fracturing of the plastic waist cinch hardware was a fluke. After the second washing the hood cinch hardware was gone. The Patagonia gear I knew and loved in the 80s and 90s seems gone.

The jacket is very light

The jacket fits well but it is too high under the arms and the shoulders, and also it suffers from the same defect the Torrentshell suffered before, it does not have any structure on the collar, it is just a loose fabric that drops on your shoulders, exposing the tag in the back and looking messy and unstylish. Houdini Jacket - Shocking

The Houdini windbreaker provides excellent protection from the wind. I use it for my daily walks in temperatures from 38 to 55. The jacket has one unanticipated unpleasant side effect - it builds up static and can create quite a surprising jolt when you touch metal.

Hey Les, we appreciate the feedback on the Houdini. We're glad to hear it's working well for you with exception to the static! We did some research and found that there are a few things you can do to help reduce this. You can rub the jacket with a dryer sheet, or increase the humidity on it by rubbing it down with a damp rag. Dry air is what causes static, amongst other things so give those options a try and if you find that the problem is not reduced, you're welcome to [send it back to us](

Great minimalist shell for when the sun goes down

I've been carrying this in my MTB hip pack for the last month and it's been just what I needed when the sun goes down, wind picks up, and the chill sets in. I'm really happy with how small it packs down, but also how easily I can get it back into its stow pocket. I can quickly slip it on, zip it up (zipper feels durable) and keep on ... Read Moremoving. Just enough wind protection to keep me warm. Haven't had a chance to use it for climbing yet but I envision clipping it to my harness for alpine climbs. My only suggestion would be to a way to stow or remove the hood. It flaps around when I'm riding and don't have it over my helmet. Minor issue.

Super light and comfortable

A very light and comfortable jacket. It repels small amounts of water, so in a light rain storm it works fine. I wore this hiking during strong winds and I couldnt feel the wind through the jacket.

Weird pocket

Love the jacket! Wish I would have bought one a long time ago. Only have a wish.... The small pocket on the chest for a key, gel, etc should be somewhere else or have its own little drawstring. You have a jacket that weighs less than anything you put in its pocket. Thus, the weight difference creates a strange bounce right over your chest when you... Read More run. Since the jacket at the chest area is not snug (nor should be) the bounce becomes even more prominent. The sensation goes away quickly. Bonus: You can tie the jacket around your waist and fold it in such a way the pocket is readily available. I ran 33KM with the gels perfectly placed on the lower right side. Worked perfectly. Thanks, hope this was a bit helpful and to anyone reading, hope you are healthy and happy. RJ

Good windbreaker, poor breathability

I bought this specifically for cutting the wind while running/cycling. I was unsure about the jacket because of how thin it is. If you're buying online, it's literally thinner than paper. Imagine a bride's veil, its that thin and light. However, I was very surprised at how incredible it is at breaking the wind. I ran in 30 deg, 20-25... Read Moremph winds and I couldn't feel it at all. I was amazed. Even cycling I was impressed by how well it cut the wind. Now for the bad parts. It is insanely unbreathable. Imagine running in a trash bag. I am drenched in sweat every time I run in it. This is not necessarily a bad thing because it breaks the wind efficiently so the sweat doesn't make you cold like you'd expect. But it does leave you feeling like you just got out of the pool. Lastly, the hood is freaking stupid. It's so light that it is like a parachute behind you. Unless you keep it up (but seriously who uses a hood when running) it is very irritating. I have been tucking the hood inside the jacket so it doesn't get on my nerves. I would buy a hoodless version if it existed, but it unfortunately does not. Size wise, it does fit a bit slim, but I like that. It is not baggy or flappy. If you are a bigger person you might want to size up, but I'm 6'4 160lbs and the medium fits well (my other patagonia jacket is also a medium). Overall I'd give it 9/10 for windbreaking, 2/10 for breathability. And a -999/10 for the hood being as useful as a lifeguard at an olympic swimming event.

THIN!!! (but in a good way)

Upon opening my mailbox and seeing the jacket sent in a cardboard mailer (I honestly thought it was something else before I saw the Patagonia on the label) I had my suspicions. They dont call this thing the Houdini for no reason! CRAZY thin! Its so cool how small it folds down you can practically store it in your back pocket. I was also a little ... Read Morenervous that it wouldnt feel very warm due to its thinness but after a 25 minute walk with my dogs in 32 F weather, I was just fine. What a cool jacket, seriously. 10/10 would recommend.

Disappears in your pack windbreaker

Works really well for me for ski touring, xc skiing, hiking, running in cold temps. I can fit it in a fanny pack along with my water bottle so easily. So compressible. For that reason I don't leave this behind on any hike. I've only had mine about a year and haven't seen any wear yet, though I know friends who have patched ones. Only... Read More a matter of time, I suppose. But until then, it's serving me really well. It isn't snug on me but isn't roomy either. I'm 5'11 170lb and I expect for heavier people the M might be a little snug. Suits me well for my outdoors pursuits, though, where I want to avoid baggier clothes.

Light weight, wind proof, and water resistance. Nice look too.

Good, but zipper could be better.....

Nice light weight jacket...don't know how it will wear over time. Zipper could be better quatlity which is also true for Patagonia Vest and down coat I bought ...for the cost should put in a better quality zipper....major flaw in a what appear to be quality products otherwise!

Great light wind and mist jacket

Very light weight and breathable to an extent when you sweat the jacket sticks so you and has a hard time drying but as long as u have a capilene on underneath everything is great and it seems to be fine. If I could improve the jacket I would make sleeve length a bit longer and give a sealed seam zipper but I love Patagonia so I support there produ... Read Morect and would definitely buy this my faults are very nit picky so really its a great jacket
