Best Base Layer Available.
The R1 material is the best in comfort, fit, warmth, breathability, and application that Patagonia offers. Worn by itself, or in layer, the R1 is hands down best baselayer I've tried, anywhere. I have in mulch brown, palo green, and black. You must try it out, you'll be very impressed.
Bought this for my daughter during the sale, she has been teaching skiing all winter and needed another base layer, the women's were all sold out so we got a Mens Medium. It fits well, a little looser in mid section than a woman's would be but works with another layer under, or alone as well. Love the front pocket, and it is oh so soft!
New favorite versatile mid layer
510 185lbs large is perfect!! So far Ive worn cross country skiing both as a baselayer under a soft shell on cold days (10-20°F) and over a light baselayer on warm days (30-35°F). Running in temps up to 50°F seems great. Breathes well! Dries quickly. Its a great blend of technical material with a classic, casual look. Ive work it to work, at home a... Read Morend everywhere. Puffier than what it looks like in picture
It is warm, and way puffier than what I thought I was buying. It looks lighter in color and fabric than what it actually is. Not a "heavy" long sleeve t-shirt, rather a full on fleece. Not a bad product at all, just not what I was looking for
Thank you for taking the time to share your review, Stefano. We're sorry to hear this R1 Air Fleece wasn't what you expected! Yes, it's a pretty beefy fleece. If it's not going to work for you, we'll be happy to help you [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) it. Please let us know how we can help!
Perfect Sweater for lounging, casual wear
Very warm, comfortable, and love that this is slim fit. Patagonia doesn't offer a lot of slim fit clothes but when they do, the item is excellent. Fleece is great material. Just got the sweater so let's hope it lasts (I used to own a Better Sweater and the fleece on that is awful).
Slim fit for my wide shoulders.
I really like it. Super warm and stylish. Bit tight for the wide shouldered people out there. Looking forward to the many years of use.
We appreciate your feedback, Nicholas! If the "slim" fit design of the R1 is constricting at all, we recommend checking out our slightly more roomy ["regular" fit fleece tops](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/mens-fleece?prefn1=fit&prefv1=regular). We'll be happy to exchange that for you!
warm and dry mid layer
I have many R-1 but this is my first crew, this is a great choice when I am going to have multiple layers with zip up neck. This workhorse is a great layering piece that keeps warm when idle and dry during aerobic efforts by wicking away moisture. Love that it is recycled!
Lightweight breathable base or first layer
I was a little skeptical about this pullover but turns out I love it. The pocket fabric is really nice and light weight (which was a concern having not seen one in real life) and the fabric is soft enough to be a base layer but the piece can also be used as ones on again off again layer. Im 60 and weigh 150 lbs. Ive always been a size small in Patagonia and prefer a trim fit. This was too short in the torso, too short in the arms, and too snug to fit a base layer under. I love the fabric and was really hoping this would work out as a mid layer for winter sports, but the fit just didnt work. Looking at measurements, the medium was n... Game changer pants
This is my first pair of puffy pants and they're amazing. I've only had them for a few weeks but I've already worn them lounging at home, sitting around a winter campfire, under my drysuit paddling a frigid river, as an extra layer in my sleeping bag on a winter camping trip, and on a 2-hour gravel bike ride. Warm Base Layer
Been running this as a base layer during early season skiing here in Mammoth. Super warm, comfortable, and pretty much all I need under a shell down to 30°. 58 141. Small in all Patagonia items. The R1air is heavier and warmer than the wool/capilene regular air. It breaths well for its weight but its not as breathable as the regular air. But it's a Patagonia and Its IRON CLAD.
Tight Armpits, had to size up
5 ft 10, 175 lbs. Originally bought a size medium (I have an older r1 pullover in medium and it fits fine) and found it fit pretty well everywhere except it was tight in the armpits. A little surprising as this is one of the few articles of clothing I own in a Large now. I really like the R1 air fabric. I'll probably buy a zip neck or hoody in the near future.
by the gods!
Someone must have lost their liver to eagles to bring this to us. It's almost got an electric heat to it yet is super breathable. Medium is a good fit for 5'10" / 180 lb
Bodies come in all shapes and sizes, but this is pretty close to perfect for me. I'm 5'10" and 180 lbs. The Better Sweaters were always a bit baggy on me. I bought this knowing medium would be a bit snug for my 511, 160lbs body, and it fits like I wanted it to. Much less tight than capilene thermal hoodie, but still form fitting. A perfect fit, perfect look, and perfect temp regulation.
I feel like I'm kinda in-between sizes with most Patagonia tops so I size up to a medium. While not a form fitting top it is indeed a slim fit which looks perfect on me. I got it in brown. SLIM FITTING AMAZING SWEATER
I love R1 Air Fleece Fabric. But I also love my sweatshirts to be baggier, slouchy, and relaxed. I am 5'10" 165lbs and have a 39in chest. Good technical piece
This is a great piece of gear that I am looking forward to wearing in cold weather for a JMT thru hike. Clearly warm and breathable at the same time. My complaint is the lack of a tall size offering. Highly recommend it if you are looking for a comfy medium weight top.
Great fabric, but did not like the collar.
I have been wearing R1 and R2 products for years. This was the first time I tried a crew collar design. I didn't like the fit, feel or appearance and retuned it and ordered the 3/4 zip R1 version with a tall collar and really like it. Very comfortable and easy on/off.
My New Fav
The R1 crew is very comfortable. I find myself wearing it all the time inside and outside. To be frank, good base layers aren't that hard to find--Patagonia, obviously, makes great baselayers, but so do REI, SmartWool, etc. What sets this apart is its versatility. So glad I got it
The reviews on the R1 air crew peaked my interested so I ordered the Mulch Brown colorway. The color was exactly what I expected in person so that was nice. Also lets be honest, were all spending a lot of time at home these days and this is a perfect work from home sweater.
Super Soft and yet technical.
