Returned product. Didn't seem very warm.

Hey Fred, thanks for the review. The Capilene Thermal Weight Zip-Neck is one of our baselayer items, so it's meant to be worn in a layering system. While it might not seem worn, you'd be surprised while layered up and out in the field! You can check out our other baselayer options [here](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/mens-baselayers). We recommend the entire Capilene Air product line.

Nice fit. Comfortable base layer

Very comfortable to wear. Neat design. High quality. But not as warm as UA’s base 3.0 coldwear

March 4, 2023

Nice, but not as comfy as 44447 for size

Was trying to order a second of what turned out to be my old 44447 but at the time only had the online pictures to try to find old shirt. The new 43657 XXL was a bit smaller than the 44447 XXL and not as comfortable a material.

March 2, 2023

Using as sleep shirt on my 2023 Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike

I had the Capilene 3 Zip Neck for my sleep shirt and it was acceptable in my tent down to 13 degrees fahrenheit, but the material felt a little uncomfortable and I was a little chilly at 13 degrees, the thermal weight zip neck is warmer, lighter and so soft and comfortable. Wore it every night since I left Amicalola.

March 2, 2023

Warm as advertised

It felt a bit large to me as weigh in at 140 lb on a 5 ft 9 in frame. I usually order form fitting cut to have lesser of an air gap between body and fabric. The fabric of this shirt is very stretchy and does not have the usual feel I get from a form fit garment on the skin. But all and all, warm and functional.

Keeps a cold person warm

I get cold super easily, used this as base layer and this did the trick, didn't have to wear 2 midlayers (like i typically do) just 1 mid layer and my outer coat and i was good to go!

February 28, 2023

It was heavier than I

It was heavier than I wanted at this time, but otherwise fine.

February 28, 2023

Nice and warm

The Patagonia Men's Capilene is a warm and comfortable base layer that I use with skiing. I ski about 50 days per year. I am a supervisor at our local ski hill in the temperatures at 10,000 feet get a little bit chilly. This is a perfect complement to my Patagonia jacket.

Hi Jan, thank you for taking the time to write a review. We're very sorry to hear that the Capilene Thermal Weight Zip-Neck was too sheer. Please feel free to begin a [return or exchange](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) at your earliest convenience.

service for my return of medium in exchange for size large was fine. the people with whom I had contact were courteous, thoughtful, and kind. The cap shirt in large fit me well and keeps me warm. I now have 12 of those cap shirts and love them as I love Patagonia overall.

Extremely soft and comfortable baselayer. My go to baselayer for winter runs.

The size is what I expected and works well with outer layers with our being bulky. It helps keep me warm with my cold gear when on the trail. Can't wait to try it the next time when skiing.

Weight of a shirt Warmth of a sweater

Love the thermal weight without the extra heaviness, comparable to the midweight capilene in heft. Overall a phenomenal product. I miss the old base layers

Many years ago I bought a few half-zip base layer tops that were called something like "Heavyweight Capilene". They are still my favorite shirts for cold weather (by Los Angeles standards.) We're sorry this fabric wasn't what you were hoping for! You might be happier with a beefier layer like the [R1](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-r1-air-zip-neck-fleece/40245.html?dwvar_40245_color=BLK). Please let us know if we can be of any help in finding a replacement!

awesome base layer

I have 2 of these thermal weight capilene base layers jerseys. They are awesome and well worth the price. I use them for winter biking and skiing. Too bad Patagonia no longer makes them. Please bring them back. I dont like the midweight ones as much.

February 8, 2023

Amazing Base Layer

This is amazing for everything. I use it for running, biking, and snowboarding. One of the best pieces of clothing I currently own. It's warm but not stifling and it wicks sweat away ridiculously fast. 11/10 will buy more.

February 8, 2023

Warm for how thin it is

Takes the chill away, weather wearing it alone in cool weather or as a base layer in cold weather. Thin enough to fit under any mid-layer.

Review Title (??)

One of my favorite Patagonia specialty items: Extremely comfortable, light weight and breathable. High warmth to weight ratio. Also stretchy, so easy to push up sleaves to release heat or when putting hands in water. Really liberating when higher capacity moisture removal is needed for activity in cold weather, and its snug-fitting neck and wrists ... Read Moreoffer good draft protection. Also cozy when less active if you wear another layer over it to block some of the wind. As for suggestions: I dont think you can hardly make the sleeves or hems too long for cold weather items. One reason I like Patagonia is that the sleaves and hems are long enough for active persuits. Still, in this item I would say they are just long enough, and on my arms I dont like the feeling of a thumb loop pulling on the valley between thumb and forfinger to keep the sleeve from pulling back when I reach up and out. Another 1.5 - 2 inches of material here would help to solve that problem. And when its not pulled over part of the hand this light weight material bunched up at the wrist is not in the way but makes an excellant draft-stop for thd wrist. My other suggestion, which applies to many of your items, is please give me some lighter and brighter color choices. My reasons include being able to find items buried in my cavernous trekking pack, mixing colors so I that can tell which item is which without unfolding it, chearing other explorers up on chilly days by not looking like a death cult zombie on the trail or in the streets between trails, and making sure that whatever layer I am down to I am easy to see by motorists when walking to the trailhead or bicycling in traffic where I live.

January 23, 2023

Solid Baselayer

Staying warm is all about layering. The Capilene thermal weight zip-neck is a nice base layer before adding additional ones. The Polartec material provides good heat retention and is quite stretchy. The deep zip is a good way to dump heat if you're overheating during activity. Keep in mind this is a slim-fit so size accordingly.

January 18, 2023

Just Right

This one is too cold, this one is too hot, and this one is just right. My first reaction when I felt the material was that I was going to need another couple of layers. First morning out, 25 degrees fahrenheit, and this item with another light fleece was perfect.

January 14, 2023

Awesome base layer

Fantastic material. Lightweight and breathable yet really warm. The collar on here keeps my neck warm and the zipper is good for when I'm overheating.

January 5, 2023

Super Warm and Comfy

Used this in a couple different settings during a cold spell. Layers well for super windy days and even wore it alone on one 30 degree day that was very still. Great material that is completely chafe free for longer runs and definitely does the job

December 31, 2022

Warm, comfy, soft.

The title says it all. Paper thin and light as a feather, yet it's all I need under a jacket. Even without an outer layer, it's pretty toasty when wearing it indoors. So I can keep the heat at a minimum reducing the bill to almost nothing.

December 26, 2022

Fabric is light but warm very comfortable

Bought this to supplement my existing repetoire of capilene tops on a Christmas trip to Iceland where we intended to do some hiking. Lighter weight than expected

I found the Thermal Weight products to be constructed of a very thin mesh-like fabric as a base, with stripes of a thin fleece-like material as the insulation. The mesh-like fabric was see-through, so no insulating value there. The stripes of fleece-like material were about 1/4-inch wide with an intervening open stripe of mesh-like fabric about 1/4... Read More-inch width also. The fleece-like material was about 1/16-inch thick. I was looking for a continuous layer of the fleece-like material as the advertising had suggested and was disappointed with the construction and performance of the product I received. It might work as a base layer for late spring or early fall weather, but definitely not enough insulating value for winter snow sports or offshore sailboat racing that I do.

December 25, 2022

Bring on the cold

I ran 10 miles in this garment today. It was 14 degrees. Wind chill was -12. This was my base layer with what I would call a just under mid-weight 1/4 zip over it. My core and my arms were PERFECT! I cannot recommend this product enough for pursuits in sub 20 environments. Its lightweight, WARM, stretchy, wicking, and AWESOME

Great Baselayer

I purchased this item to be used as a baselayer for running, hiking and climbing. I went with the medium as I'm 6'1" and slim at 155 pounds. I have extra long arms which makes finding tops that fit sometimes difficult. The medium size is perfect for me. It's a slim/form-fitting garment with sleeves that cover my arms fully (thum... Read Moreb loops are a great touch as well). To me, this is a very technical garment, meaning it's likely meant to be worn with other layers. I typically use this thermal zip with a light t-shirt under or with a heavier layer over the top. If worn on it's own, it really breathes (which is good), but also the reason why I layer it under or over. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and would buy again in a different color.

Perfect Fall/Winter Baselayer

Another flawless piece from Patagonia. Deceptively light and comfortable so you don't realize how warm it is. This with a jacket is perfect for hiking and biking, 35-55 degrees. Strong recommend.

Perfect weight for base layer or along in milder weather

Perfect underlayer

So far I have just used this for skiing (alpine and x-country) and it seems to be a great insulator with great breathability. I'm 6'1" and ordered a large and the fit is just a little short in the arms, but not enough to be an issue

Perfect for working outdoors

I wear this base layer 9+ months out of the year working on trails. Wicks away moisture, comfortable fit and durable. I appreciate the neck coverage working in the elements.

Intended to be thermal base layer for thru hike (PCT) and fits perfectly in my kit for this function. Have used this winter in Ohio and very comfortable and warm.

Good product but not as good as earlier versions of it.

I purchased three of these size L waffle-like lofted thermal tops over the last decade. First one was a dream come true. Lightweight at 205g (even after 50 washings), and exceedingly warm. Perfect fit. A couple years later I purchased a second one, but sizing had drastically changed. The Large was really a Medium and was too tight to wear a thin un... Read Morederlayer beneath it. Third one, purchased 11/2022, is a proper fit, but the thickness of material has been reduced and the loft height and stiffness of the waffle structure is also less. Weight: 175g. Consequently, it is not as warm (wearing around my cool house) as the earlier 205g version. With the lower loft height it probably doesn't breathe as well either, but I haven't yet taken it out on the bike to test this. Would I buy another one? Well, that remains to be seen--the previous ones I've owned have held up exceptionally well to wear/tear and washings and we'll see how this thinner one fares.

June 13, 2022

Perfect base

Love this as a base layer, highly recommend. I wear it frequently on and off the bike and am so happy I nabbed these this Winter.

May 12, 2022

Really like this baselayer. I'm a big fan of gridded fleece for baselayers (I own a couple R1 tops) - light, warm and the deep quarter-zip allows me to dump heat when necessary. Wore this for the whole ride during the NYC 5-Boro Bike Tour a couple weeks ago and very pleased with its performance.

May 6, 2022

Perfect Weight for California

The PolarTec brought me to this piece. I have a R1 full-zip with PolarTec and I love it. The thermal weight is nice, between a thick t-shirt and light sweatshirt. Great base layer!

Comfy cozy base layer for ski/snow. This under a parka works great for me in 30 degree weather. It is also nice enough to wear by itself away from the mountain. I feel like it runs slightly small-- fits me more like a L typically does. Two thumbs up.

Love the wicking waffle pattern and the elastic thumb loops, especially when putting other layers over it.

December 16, 2021

It's comfortable, warm, and I can wear it every day for everything I do.

December 12, 2021

Warm base layer

This is an excellent base layer. It breathes exceptionally well and - this is key - when covered by another more wind proof layer provides exceptional warmth. By itself, it can have an almost airy feel. So as part of a layered system on very cold days, its an exceptional base layer right next to the skin.

This is a great piece of kit. I bought it in black and grey. It is very breathable and also warm. I love jogging in it in the cold months because I stay warm but don't sweat too much. Poor fit

I ordered XL. Materials and quality of product seemed fine but fit was awful. Im 63 and 185, fairly thin/athletic build. The XL fit like a gown so I exchanged for size L. But when the Large size arrived it fit like a compression shirt. Im not sure who these shirt sizes are designed for but the size disparity between L and XL was ridiculous.

The Most Utilitarian Of Tops

Been wearing this product all year around for years as a sweater. It keeps me warm in the winter and, if not too hot out, pleasant in the summer. It's very stretchy, always looks neat, never wrinkles, is wash & wear, the most all around functional garment I own. I haven't found any other base layer that competes with it.

I'm saying this runs small since I usually get size small in Patagonia (I'm 6' and 155-160). I got a medium in this and it fits perfectly.

Great piece

I love this piece, Patagonias got a winner with this one for sure. Its slim fitting, so keep that in mind when purchasing. Im 60 175 and often that tweener size, so I struggle to get the right fit. I can be medium or large depending on the piece. I went large here and it fits absolutely perfect; think the medium wouldve been too tight. I use this f... We live at 6500' and in the winter this is a comfortable item to wear in the house, camping % skiing. You can be comfortable in a wide temperature and activity level range, very universal.

Warm for it's weight. Does a surprising good job as wind breaker on a bike.

My go-to baselayer.

Patagonia's capilene thermal weight layers are so phenomenal. The cut/fit is great, really comfortable, no bulkiness, the thumb loops are incredibly welcome, and the fabric is much warmer than one might think just holding it, but with an outer layer and/or shell it really does provide incredible warmth, but even more importantly to me: incredi... Read Moreble breathability. I tend to run hot and sweat easily during medium-to-high output activities, so I absolutely need breathability in cold weather and the cap thermals breath SO well and I'm able to perfectly manage heat buildup. This is a regular choice for me for snowboarding when the temps aren't frigid but are still relatively cold. Home for snowboarding for me is Vermont so it get cold. I wear the cap daily tee, cap thermal and the Untracked shell jacket, and that keeps me warm from about 20F (maybe even slightly less) to about 35F. On the lower side of that range I'll usually be a little chilly on the first lift ride or two, but after building up some heat after the first couple runs I'm good to go and don't sweat much - and any sweat is able to escape through the extremely breathable grid/fabric. The reason this got 4 stars instead of 5: I'd really like to see a chest pocket on this. Even if it had just that minimal hidden zipper rather than the kind of zipper on the hoody version. When I'm riding I like to keep my phone on the inside of my jacket on colder days to keep the battery warm, and - at least for me with the Untracked jacket - the internal pocket on the jacket is too small for a phone. On the cap thermal hoody or the R1, I'm able to keep my phone in the chest pocket of either of those, but if I'm wearing the zip-neck solo, there's no chest pocket on it unfortunately. So that would be a massively welcomed addition for me. But that's the only change I'd make.

Functional and Versatile baselayer

Very comfortable against the skin, odor control works well. I'm 5'10", 170lbs, 32 inch waist, 42 chest and a medium is form fitting, but not tight, I can wear alone as a casual piece. Men’s capilene medium weight and thermal weight base layers

I just got these, so I haven’t worn them in winter, BUT both tops and bottom fit really well. Very comfortable fabric. I can tell these will be a great base layer. We live in the Rocky Mountains, so I am looking forward to being warm this winter.

Great athletic and lounging wear

I took four of these zip T-neck tops, and two pairs of the bottoms, on a trek to Kangchenjunga in the fall of 2018l, wore them all winter backcountry skiing and skate-skiing in Jackson Hole, and took them on a trip to the Lyngen Alps in Norway in March 2019. This was given to me as a gift. I said i needed a warm fleece base layer for riding my motorcycle in the cold. This is about as thin as tissue paper, and practically see-through. Not Thermal Weight

Half the weight of mid-weight capilene. Half the weight of competitor products. Not warm because there is too much emphasis upon breathability\vapor transmission. Read Moreuot; sleeve length. The neck size on a large is always too big... it hangs like a drape around the neck, but the sleeve length is just right. A size medium fits the neck just right, but then the sleeve length is 2 inches too short. This is always an issue with Patagonia's neck and sleeve sizing. Why isn't Spandex,Elastane or some other design solution used in the neck and neck area in the baselayer and other tops to make them compression for better fit, heat retention and more aesthetic appearance ?

Love this top!

I bought one on a that was a discontinued color nearly a year ago. I loved it so much that I bought the four current colors too. They work well around town as an outer layer in mild weather. They work as a good middle layer when skiing. I wear them around the house and nap on the couch in them. The fabric is a waffle pattern on the inside surface m... Read Moreaking them very light for their thickness. The cut is perfect for me which I almost never find with any clothing. I have broad shoulders compared to my belly and waist. My arms are of a long and athletic form so most regular clothing leaves a large sleeve gap at my wrists. . The sleeves on this actually cover my wrists and the shoulders aren't restrictive while there isn't a bunch of dangling fabric in the waist. I'm 6'2",wear a 42 long suit, and have a 34" waist. My only minor gripe is that the zipper can be annoying to my neck if pulled all the way up. Also beware that the size labeling in them also includes the "Asian fit" sizing which although has smaller lettering than the regular sizing,it sort of stands out more. With one of my orders I ordered XL since that is what I saw when looking at what I already owned. XL was considerably larger and didn't fit me in a desirable way.

Soft and warm, but tends to irritate skin

I own a lightweight and mid-weight Capilene shirts, along with their R3 fleece and Nano-air hoodie. All of these products are quite perfect. True Patagonia gear

I bought this thermal first layer in a trip to NYC,some weeks ago. The neck is not close to snug fitting, and neither are any of the three tops i just bought. Slim fit ain't what it used to be. Even more surprisingly, the body is tight. I cannot reach forward/put my arms in front of me,without significant resistance in the arms, and a tight feeling in the back. The guy who reviewed a medium as too small is right. I'm 5'11",150 lbs,far below average. The tight body, when coupled with the baggy neck,is quite annoying. I'm sure that if this were any other brand than my beloved Patagonia,I'd give it one or two stars. Nearly all of my clothes are Patagonia,so I'm having a bit of an anxiety attack figuring out what I'm going to wear!:). I've literally lived in this stuff the last 12 years, nearly year round.
