If we have any hope of a thriving planet—much less a business—it is going to take all of us doing what we can with the resources we have. This is what we can do.
This is my 5th black hole duffel in about 10 years. I still have my 10 year old ones and this new one doesn't disappoint. It's the largest one I own now and I'm pretty happy with how much you can get in the 100. Materials feel different and lighter than my 10 year old bags but still feel rugged and will hopefully be as durable.
I purchased the 100 Liter duffle mainly for the purpose of transporting my gear from place to place. I've used it mostly to transport my water sport and rock climbing gear through airports, trains, and busses. I've also occasionally used the duffel for roadtrips and car camping endeavors.
The material of the duffel is thick and durable. ... Read MoreIt handles well against water (except for the bottom, which is made of a different material, justifiably to prevent wear & tear when placing the duffel on the ground). I wouldn't place the duffel in a puddle of water, but it handles well in light rain and slightly wet conditions.
The bag is simple and doesn't have any extra unnecessary features that take up space and weight. There is a strap inside the bag that can adjust the length of the bag, which is useful when the bag isn't completely full. The backpack straps are simple and light, but have a good balance between comfort and compactibility.
Cons:
. I wish there was an option for a single shoulder strap centered across the bag, which would allow the bag to be used as a shoulder duffel. (I've been using one shoulder strap for this purpose, but it is not very comfortable)
. I wish the bottom of the bag had some kind of waterproof lining, so it would be puddle proof
. Storing the bag in it's compact form is doable, but takes a bit of practice to squeeze into that shape.
Overall this bag is amazing for the puposes i use it for. I bought a smaller version to use as a carry on luggage/small travel bag and so far it's been great.
Best duffel on the market. I use them for carry on luggage, overnight bags, week long trips, permanent gear bags for all sorts of outdoor adventures, the list goes on.
All the right details with nothing extra you don't need. Can't recommend enough.
I bought the Black Hole Duffel 100L for my mountain bike gear so I can throw everything in the back for the truck on early morning rides. Easy to carry, hauls all of my gear, and everything stays dry! The bag is built really well and will definitely last a long time. I bought more bags for snow gear and the family!
I purchased this bag for hauling supplies from MN to teach a Wilderness Medicine course in AK. It was the perfect size for the plane (at the time of this review Alaska Air requires a bag to be less than 62 linear inches to avoid oversized bags fee), and the backpack straps were perfect to walk through airports to get to check-in. The storage pocket... Read Mores inside the bag are cavernous, and ample space for all your gear hauling needs. Also easy to spot at baggage claim.
The process to remove the straps before checking in is a little bit fiddly, but once you get the hang of it, its not too bad. I do find collapsing the bag for storage cumbersome. But all in all very durable, and look forward to years of use.
The newer Black Hole bags possess a more sophisticated and nuanced design than my 1993 or 2000 examples. This is attractive. To be fair, they have not yet been with me long enough to afford insight into durability and utility that characterize the earlier types. But I'm optimistic and they appear to be legit heirs to the legacy!
This bag is my sons and he used it traveling around Iceland this past holiday season and will be using it backpacking in Europe this summer. Absolutely loves it.
In my previous review, I neglected to mention that the carry handles are smaller/thinner than they used to be. Likely harder on the hands with a heavy load (I will never find out since I am returning mine ASAP).

Black Hole bags used to be the best large luggage in the world, now it is degraded by gimmicky, counterproductive features.
This is the toughest, lightest and highest capacity (I wish there was 150 L capacity made by Patagonia). Highly recommend for any terrain, travel or hiking trip. This bag fit everything I needed for a long trip. The backpack straps were great for the airport and going to/from cars. I am 5'4'' and was worried it would be too cumbersome but it worked out well!
I always wanted onenof these. I was envious when I saw one on the carousel at the airport SO .....I bought two huge 100l duffels and I love it. This bag will be going with me to Africa.
I got two of the 100 L bags last year (the navy blue with red accent and a dark turquoise with yellow accent I no longer see available). Their main purpose is long term international travel when I have bulky items that dont fit in my regular suitcase. Ive only used them twice so far but they look brand new despite being tossed around and hearing th... Read Moreem dragged and scrape against concrete floor. Im amazed and so glad I splurged on these rather than settle for a lower quality bag. I do agree with a comment I saw that the compression straps are not as useful as they could be. They could either be external, or if internal should start at the base/floor of the bag rather than halfway up the side which makes an odd pinch point. Another point for improvement is I would have preferred being able to lock it completely. As it is, if you lock the main compartment zipper, you still have the side zipper which opens to an internal pocket which open to the main compartment via another zipper, and there is no way to lock these to deter wandering hands. Still, very pleased with the bags.
Im 5ft 4in and am able to carry this with the shoulder straps. Its awkward and I look like an ant but its doable.
This really lives up to its name. I use this as a catch-all for outdoor gear. Tent, sleeping bag, tarp, cooking gear, outdoor clothing, etc. Great to have everything in one spot and can easily throw into the back seat of a car if I need to just grab everything quickly.
The one issue I have with this is the compression straps, I really wish they we... Read Morere external. Due to the vast size of the bag, the compression straps do not help unless you layer blankets/other large objects to compress against -small items shift around the straps.
This bag has literally gone all over the world. I can pack everything I need in one checked bag. It is super sturdy and can hold up to all kinds of TSA and baggage handler abuse.
I bought this bag for my Kilimanjaro summit and it was perfect. The material is stronger than all the other similar duffels I looked at. I wish it came with a regular shoulder strap like most duffels.
We purchased this bag to carry our child's car seat while traveling. The large mouth opening allows for easy packing and unpacking of the car seat. The backpack straps also come in handy for longer walks between airport security and gate. I have 4 of these 100L BH bags. We use them in our Thule Motion XT XXL roof box when we travel. Four fit perfectly. Over the years I have bought different colors. I do wish Patagonia would offer more color choices in the 100L like they do in the smaller BH bags.
My old black hole bag has lasted 30 plus years and been around the world many times. Unfortunately it was worn beyond repair and the new bag is a simple replacement. A great bag.
Took this bag down to Costa Rica as the family gear bag (aka the stinky bag). A must have.
The single most functional travel and baggage item I own.
This bag was a gift for my wife's birthday. She immediately decided it was amusing to put me IN the bag. I only just fitted and had to really fold up my legs. Would recommend larger bags for any normal sized adult. Kids fitted just fine.
This thing is very big! I can fit my 5'1" girlfriend inside it no problem (Don't worry this was done by her choosing). I also really like the shoulder straps. They can easily be put on or taken off depending on what you're doing. When you need to store the bag it folds up nicely into its internal pocket.
I have a few black hole bags now- 55L, 70L, and 100L, totes, and ALL of them are great! Using the backpack straps helps a bunch when using this particular bag. Being 5' 3", I can basically fit into the 100L bag. It holds everything. As my brother said this past weekend; "you could throw that off an airplane and it would be okay"... Read More. Buy this and every other black hole duffel and tote! I do wish that the black hole material was on the bottom as well. I feel like if the bottom was exposed to moisture, it would leak into the bag....!
We're so glad to hear you're loving the bags! Note that our Black Hole bags are not waterproof, but rather water-resistant. They also don't have sealed seams, so those are areas where water can potentially enter the bag. Workhorse with verve, almost an ally
I loaded 2 100-liter black hole duffels for my move to Europe with 4 pets (i.e., lots of stuff) (AND used my now 25-year old Patagonia MLC bag as well). Even getting all the gear packed in these bags made me feel better: an explosion of stuff stowed neatly and safely. Instant organization. Easy to identify on the luggage carousel. Easy to move (ok,... Read More with help, but it was easier to GET help because of the various straps and carrying options).
Cant tell you how many times ive used this bag on work trips and family life. Its been constantly reliable, and has paid for itself over and over! highly recommend it to everyone
The Black Hole bag is perfect. Stuffed it full of ...stuff... threw it on the airplane conveyer belt and didn't worry about it. Survived the luggage handlers without a single mark.
I take this thing with me everywhere. Great for traveling. Comes with a strap or you can wear it like a backpack. Very versatile and lightweight, yet extremely spacious.
An absolute workhorse. I've put my black hole duffel through a couple dozen international flights, hundreds of miles in boats, and hauled this unit all over the globe and it refuses to tear up. This is a must have bag for any travel or outdoor enthusiast. I've beaten it up it non-stop for the past three years, giving it far more abuse than it was probably made to accept. I've thrown it around planes, trucks, helicopters, and boats, lugged it up mountains and dragged it across tarmacs. It's kept my things dry in the tropics,... Read More and sand-free in the desert. It (finally) popped one of it's two buttons, but I still use it all the time.
Volume-wise it fit everything I needed for an 8 month trip. Equally if not more impressive, it fits everything a family of four with two kids under 6 needs for a long weekend.
No issues with any of the zippers, no holes after three years of serious abuse, and only one popped button (which I think was caught on a strap on an airplane). The shoulder straps are thin, and not ideal for extended wear, but handy in a baggage line or waiting for a ride when your hands are full.
I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
I have owned this duffle bag for 4 years now, and I don't regret my purchase. The bag is well design, you can fit a lot of stuff in it and it is very durable. You won't regret it, go ahead and get this one, you'll have for all your life!!
Huge and tough but surprisingly light. Removable shoulder straps so it can be carried like a pack. I work on a ship and travel all the time and have several of these in various sizes.
I ordered this to replace my old backpack I use as a travel duffel. When it arrived I did not know how small it really packs down to when you're not using it, it's surprising how lightweight it is too. Recently took my Black Hole 70L duffel to the Boundary Waters in northern MN. I use this Duffle as a "Red Bag" for work.
It holds 14 days work of minimalist clothing along with my sleeping bag and pad. Easy access and smaller compartments hold my toiletries and a couple of books along with other small stuff. Its durable and seems to be water resistant.
Great bag and improved construction with newer generation. However, as a mountain and ski guide, I find that not having a bag for mountaineering equipment and ski gear that is 120L or more in size a huge hinderance to efficiency and logistics with having to check more bags. This duffel bag is rugged and ready to contain all that I need for todays adventures as well as tomorrows. Looking forward to continue using it. The stowaway pocket was a pleasant surprise.
Great bag my only complaint is the 100L is kinda big for what we need and the 70L is kinda small great bag we will keep buying for our crew (West Yellowstone Smokejumpers) but a 85L would be perfect!
I have multiple Black Hole bags, and they carry my gear... ALL of my gear just about everywhere. I bought the Blackhole 100L duffle bag for a camping trip and it was great. I was able to fit everything into the bag and close it up no problem. Extremely durable - waterproof except for the zipper. Lots of details, such as the internal compression straps, make a huge difference. Compact and stored in its own pocket when not in use. Most bush pilots will tell you that the 70-liter is just about perfect for loading in this type of aircraft, or for when transferring to boats.

Got my 100L bag and was happy with how solidly it seemed to be constructed. I was, however, a bit surprised at how large it is, so am returning it for the 70L bag. Only complaint is that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to put it back into itself. I just put the whole thing back into a box and shipped it back for somebody else to figure out.
This bag is awesome so far. I live/work on a boat, so the waterproofing was a big reason I chose this one. I also love that it folds up nicely into its own side pouch, so it can be compact, but you don’t have to keep track of a separate small bag. I envision using this bag for many years to come!
