bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Water Resistant

(durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wear it all day in the mountains I bought this jacket as an uphill outer layer for backcountry skiing, for this use I have not yet been able to test the product, (pray for snow!) but the other activities I have used it for I have been impressed. This is a softshell that falls on the more breatheable/less weatherproof end of the spectrum. When I say breatheable, I mean it. I know the claim of a breatheable jacket is not always reliable, but I assure you this one is quite comfortable to wear when hiking up steep hills to approach rock climbs. The weatherproofing on this shell is quite nice though, I have worn it in a windy blizzard, and been alright. Even though a bit of wind came through the jacket, I remained dry. Although I wouldn't recommend wearing this as your only weather proof layer, I would recommend this jacket for most mountain weather conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great jacket Used it for hike up Grays and Torreys peaks. Did a great job blocking the wind. Planning on using it for many more hikes. Size does run small in the chest and stomach area, which could be a problem when layering.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great but not for Alpine Climbing I use this jacket every day for commuting and running on very rainy windy days. For these everyday challenges this is a great jacket. I also bought it to go climbing in the French alps on dry but windy days. Last week it turned out to be not so very much windproof for these type of conditions. Even at moderate windspeed I Could just feel the wind coming through. I even changed with my climbing partner and he had exact the same idea. It is a little sorry and misleading that this jacket is listed between the Climbing proof jackets and actually is not. as an absolute Patagonia fan and believer in its values it is somehow strange. If you want a Climbing proof sofshell you probably have to buy the adze I guess.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best soft shell I got this jacket 2nd hand from a buddy who gained a bit of weight and no longer fit into it. Which worked out great for me! (he has since lost the weight, but can't have the jacket back) I bring this thing with me EVERYWHERE! I live in Minnesota and our weather is CRAY. The jacket is breathable and is great for summer mornings @ the campsite, but it will keep you warm down to 30 degrees if you layer over a flannel. I got stuck on a river during a rain storm with this jacket on and I was soaked right to the core. Once the rain let up, I laid the jacket across the gear in the canoe and it was bone dry within 30 mins (no exaggeration). I am 5'11" and weigh 155 lbs and the medium is perfect. Buy this jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Only a Great Climbing Jacket I made the switch this year from name brand ski jackets to Patagonia Gear. I have armed my kit with hard shells, vests, R1 and older R3 fleece, Nano puff jacket, vest and a down sweater. What was missing was a highly breathable piece for spring skiing. You know the days when you start out at 8:30 am and it could be in the high 20s but by noon it is in the 40s. My hard shells (Triolet and M10) were too warm. We commonly have winds in the 20mph range where I ski but it can gust really high (they close the chair when winds exceed 50mph). I purchased the Levitation hoodie (slim fit) knowing I would have to limit my layers so I have been going out with my R1 fleece and Nano vest which allows me to drop the vest when it gets warm. The Levitation hoodie does a great job of balancing warmth and breathability throughout my day. It has a high collar if I want to zip it up and fits over my ski helmet if the weather warrants it. Really soft and supple and the knit cuffs fit great under my ski gloves. I know this was designed for climbing but don't overlook it for spring skiing too! Love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect. I absolutely love this jacket. Good breath-ability, good range of motion, excellent fit (emphasized), and very excellent weather resistance. I've had this jacket for a few months now, and have been using it every time the temp dips below T-shirt comfort levels. The jacket blocks the wind well, I use it riding my bike all the time and have never felt any wind coming through. Water resistance is the grey area for soft shells, but this preforms exactly as I'd hoped. I wore it walking in fairly heavy rain for 40 minutes on the way to a class, stayed perfectly dry, and when I got out of the class the jacket had completely dried off over the hour. I also walked for Another 40 minutes back afterwards (still raining) and I could start to feel moisture on my shoulders, but I think that was just from the soaked backpack strap. My clothes (even on the shoulders) were dry when I checked it at home. The hood fits over a helmet, although not with great range of motion. Not that important to me though, as I'm not ice climbing with it. I'd look at the reconnaissance for that. This jacket does not come with any insulation. And I think that is a huge plus, as it makes it much more versatile. The breath-ability is pretty good, I run fairly hot and can start sweating easily, however the jacket doesn't get stuffy very easily. Good pockets, two above the waist strap/harness hand pockets, a napoleon pocket, and two very large internal pockets. The two internal pockets are the only area I have a concern with, and it's the only reason I gave a 4/5 instead of 5/5. They're long and roomy, which is great, and you can slide items like your wallets, gloves, or phone and still be able to use the hand pockets without having stuff in the way since it sits below them. But they have a hole at the ends, and my phone has slipped out of it once while getting into my car. It only happened once, and I didn't lose it, but it makes me rethink putting heavy and slippery items (like a phone) without running headphones through it to keep it up. Overall, great job, I hope to see it offered for years to come, along with more colors. Right now only grey and red appeal to me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a very helmet compatible hood I bought this jacket for what seemed to be its intended purpose from its description on the website, alpine, rock and ice climbing. The jacket itself is great fits well and is very stretchy. The hood however does not fit well over a helmet. Well I suppose it does fit over a helmet so long as you don't intend on moving you head up or down or side to side. not ideal if you actually want to climb in it. Pretty disappointed with this so called alpine climbing softshell that i find myself not even wearing anymore if it is anything but a bluebird day and i might want to wear the hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, Versatile Option I bought this jacket for my husband because of the reviews - read that it was light-weight, with lots of breathability, but still had good warmth. And the reviews were definitely correct. My husband loves this jacket. He runs really warm and always struggles to find a good jacket that keeps him warm, but not too warm. This one is the ticket. Super lightweight jacket, even more lightweight than I was expecting. But he says that's great for him. He always has said it is incredibly breathable, so keeps him warm, but not overheating or getting too sweaty. He's a outdoor/wildlife photographer and has worn it on multiple shoots and really likes it. Hood feature is a nice addition. My husband is about 6'2" and 185lb and a large fits him perfectly. He doesn't have a long wingspan (arm span), though, so if you do, may need to go up a size...? Overall, though, great jacket - probably he's new favorite for anything, but super cold weather.
