If only your partner were as versatile as our R3® Hoody, you wouldn’t be leading that wide pitch right now. Wear the R3® as an outer layer when you’re moving forward, reverse it out for high-pile warmth under an outerlayer when the pace slows down. Compressible and resilient, this reversible Regulator® fleece hoody is made of an exclusive Polartec® High Loft™ polyester fleece that wicks moisture, dries quickly and caches heat when temperatures plunge. Worn pile side out, it has two handwarmer pockets and an internal zippered chest pocket; worn smooth side out, the chest pocket becomes external. The R1® cuffs have spiral-seam construction and are easy to push up; elastic binding at the close-fitting hood, the hem and the handwarmer pockets further seals in warmth. Sonic/Stitch seam construction reduces bulk on the center-front zipper; a soft, kissing-welt center-front zipper garage is easy on the chin; offset shoulder seams stay clear of pack straps.
  • Exclusive to Patagonia, this Polartec® High Loft™ fleece provides exceptional warmth, dries quickly and has breathability appropriate for use as an outer layer or midlayer
  • Snug-fitting hood with elastic binding locks in heat; underarm gussets and raglan sleeves for increased mobility and comfort under a pack
  • Reversible style has removable tags and reversible center-front zipper with soft kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
  • Pile side out: hoody-style handwarmer pockets with elastic binding; smooth side out: glued-on, zippered chest pocket
  • Center-front zipper has Sonic/Stitch seam construction to reduce bulk and improve suppleness
  • Clean-finished cuffs use R1® Polartec Power Grid™ fabric in a spiral-seam construction
  • Elastic binding at hem, hood and handwarmer pockets seals in warmth
  • Body: 8.9-oz Polartec® High Loft™ 97% polyester (53% recycled)/3% spandex. Cuffs: 6.9-oz Polartec® Power Grid™ 93% recycled polyester/7% spandex. Pockets: 3.4-oz 100% nylon woven. Fabric is bluesign® approved

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for all temperatures and occasions! I bought two of these: black and electric blue. I wear them all the time. The material is the perfect weight and beyond soft!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sheds everywhere This fleece is a great design but it sheds worse than my dog. This piece is right about 2 months old and there is orange fleece on everything. I would say it is not the warmest fleece either, its actually fairly thin. We have almost all Patagonia gear and love all of it but not this one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fits great, sheds like an Elmo doll This is a great fleece that I have used for running, skiing, and sitting around and eating. My only beef with it is I bought it in red and even after 4 wash/dryer cycles I am trailing clouds of red fluff behind me. I can literally track my day just by following the bits of red left in my wake. I'm like Elmo if he got super stressed out and developed alopecia. Still, it's a nice fleece and I'll keep wearing it because comfort > other people's black shirts.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't wear the zipper against your skin. I bought this piece because my husband love his. My first complaint is the zipper. If you wear this under a helmet close to your skin the metal zipper is very cold/sticks to you lips. The zipper "garage" is not nearly big enough. My other complaint is the pockets. On my husbands r3, there are chest pockets that are usable on both sides, one side with the hand pockets. On the women's the chest pocket is on the opposite side as the hand pockets. I'll never be able to use the chest pocket because my hands always come first. To make this a usable piece there needs to be a bigger zipper garage or a plastic zipper and pockets all on the same side... Otherwise the piece is warm and cozy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Women's R3 Hoody I purchased this hoody mainly as a mid/outer layer for running outdoors in the winter. I was deciding between the R3 and the R1 for this purpose. I ultimately went with the R3 because I tend to get cold easily and the R3 did promise greater warmth. I would say that it delivers on that promise; I've managed to stay warm running outside in 30F temperatures with just this jacket, a long sleeve thermal underneath, and a wind breaker jacket on top of all of it. I also tend to wear this jacket a lot around the house to stay warm while keeping the heating bill down. The one negative thing I have noticed about this jacket is one that other reviewers have also mentioned. This jacket sheds. A lot. I got this jacket in the teal color, so the shedding is pretty noticeable. I've had this jacket for about a month now and I'm continuing to find teal fuzz everywhere - on my running tights, on my cotton tank tops, even on my desk. I'd estimate that in total, all the material I've cleaned up is enough to form a golf ball-sized fuzzball at this point. I'm worried about how long the jacket will be able to keep me warm if it keeps losing its fibers at the current rate. Overall, I do like the jacket but the constant shedding is slightly annoying to clean up and is making me wish I had purchased the R1 instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I bought this as a mid layer, light coat, and liner for my rain jacket. I really love it. It's super warm but not bulky, zips smooth, feels great (although it did shed red fuzz everywhere when I first wore it) the pockets are a decent size too. I really feel like this is something I can get 4 seasons out of. One thing I wasn't too stoked on was the way it zips up fully with the hood on. It sits at a strange place and feels a little claustrophobic. When zipped fully without the hood up you have to fold it almost like a turtle neck (but watching the product video I see how they made it work.) I've been wearing it non-stop since I got it and the other night at the climbing gym literally every person I saw stopped me and asked about it.
