Work in Progress Report.
Earth is noeasy boss.
Three years ago, we made Earth our only shareholder. Since then, reporting to her hasn’t been easy. Our first Work in Progress Report details the truth about how we’re messing up, where we’re making progress and all the stubborn challenges ahead.
Business Unusual
We exist to save our home planet. That's not just a purpose statement—it's part of our legal charter and embedded into the way Patagonia is owned and governed.
Product
Building quality, functional and durable gear is the heart of our business. But we have different criteria for quality than most. We insist that our products must perform, endure, be multifunctional, minimize harm and last for generations.
“While every Patagonia product solves a problem in the field, making anything comes with a cost in terms of how and where it was built, and who built it.”
Grants & Giving
Since 1985, we’ve donated 1% of all sales to grassroots nonprofits. Along with our nonprofit owner, Holdfast Collective, the organizations and initiatives we fund represent a powerful collective movement to protect, preserve and regenerate our lands and waters for generations to come.
“The biggest environmental victories in history are driven by people-powered movements. Movements that start with strategies, advocates and actions that build off momentum and with investment.”
Activism
Most of the grassroots nonprofits we fund have big ideas, low overhead and small teams at the helm. Sometimes, a check is what’s most helpful to them; often, what we offer beyond the check—like leveraging our company resources, voice and platforms—can make the bigger difference.
“Our goal isn’t just to support a grassroots organization once during a crisis. It’s to enable a movement that can help communities in the long run.”
