A little over ten years ago, big-wave surfing changed forever. It followed a series of near-death experiences and tragic losses in the community. Then, one day at Mavericks, the inflation vest arms race began. After Shane Dorian and Kohl Christensen had close calls at the infamous wave off of Half Moon Bay, California, they went back to the respective sponsors with a similar idea — developing equipment that could bring surfers back to the surface faster.
“It was like this thing that had flown down from outer space,” says 2x Big-Wave World Champ, Paige Alms in the film.
Along with the development and near-universal adoption of the vest for big-wave surfers, Inflation Point traces the paddle revolution of the mid-2000s, the tragic loss of Sion Milosky, the double-edged sword the vest created and the triumphs and failures of early inflation.
