Our midsize classic backpack with two main compartments and one external stash pocket is perfect for managing your daily grind.

Read More Close
The midsize Refugio Pack has two main compartments, one external stash pocket, and a clean, uncomplicated design to keep you organized in town or on the trail. The main compartment holds much of the load and features a lined tablet sleeve for quick access to your hand-held electronics, and a dedicated computer sleeve that accommodates most 15" laptops (the same sleeve also accepts a hydration reservoir when your feet leave the cement). The second, zippered pocket holds your smaller supplies and keeps electronics, cords and accessories organized. On the exterior, a front stash pocket is just right for plane tickets or other small items you want close at hand. Stretch-woven side pockets accommodate a full range of water-bottle shapes and sizes. Airflow mesh on the shoulder straps and back panel prevents overheating, while compression straps stabilize contents. Made from 630-denier 100% nylon (50% recycled/50% high-tenacity) plain weave. The lining is 200-denier 100% recycled polyester. Both fabrics have a polyurethane coating and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Water Resistant

DWR (durable water repellent) fabric finish repels light rain and snow and decreases dry times. When DWR is used in conjunction with a waterproof/breathable barrier, the DWR finish keeps the outer fabric from becoming saturated so that the breathable barrier can do its job.

Recycled Nylon

Although we’ve been using recycled polyester in our garments for 20 years, for some reason locked deep in polymer chemistry, nylon is more difficult to recycle than polyester. After years of research, development, and testing, we’re finally finding some recycled nylon fibers that are suitable for apparel.

Some of the recycled nylon we use comes from post-industrial waste fiber, yarn collected from a spinning factory, and waste from the weaving mills that can be processed into reusable nylon fiber.

We’re diligently searching for a success story with recycled nylon. The challenge lies ahead of us, and we’re committed to discovering the best methods to recycle nylon fiber, but it appears this evolution will take many years.

Refugio Pack 28L is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as old style Refugio I used to have the older version of the refugio backpack. It broke and I replaced it with this new version. I have to say that I much prefer my old backpack. This one just doesn't live up. The zipper going vertically through the center of the pack is essentially pointless, I have yet to find anything I could possibly store in a slot like that. The space isn't as great. The only aspect of the pack that I like is the slot specifically fitted to hold a laptop. Overall, unimpressed, go back to the basics, guys.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great Airport Travel Companion I have waited 2 months before writing the review to make sure I get it right. This pack is a very good airport travel pack. It fits the bill for a separate laptop compartment, so easy to slide in and out of TSA and it holds lots of stuff. The middle pocket is the largest- holds a ton of stuff, the front pocket holds plenty with smaller org and zip pockets. Pro's holds a lot, 3 zip compartments, material better than I first thought, shoulder straps very comfortable with a weighted pack. Cons: Zipped pockets only go 3/4 so you gotta dig to get stuff in bottom out- I mean dig- a few times I thought I did not bring something as it got lost in the bottom. The other con is there is no small top zip like my last Patagonia pack so wallet/keys etc get thrown into the cavern

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Straps Bought for myself during the Christmas, amazing size but my only problem is that the breathable mesh on one of the straps is becoming undone. It’s causes a poking, scratchy feeling when wearing a short sleeve tee with the bag.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruins clothes I read other reviews about this but thought they were maybe odd situations. Nope. Has already ruined a hoodie and a tshirt that I loved. In general the backpack is not very comfortable either to begin with. Sure, I'm a broad shouldered guy but I'm no Arnold yet this backpack kills my traps and shoulder. The straps are way too close together

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Product I needed something light and available for commuting. Found just what I needed in the 28L. Our Rock Creek store didn’t have a variety of colors to choose from (I ended up with the red pack) but it still serves its purpose.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loved it, but... This was a requested Christmas gift. I loved the look and design of it. Probably my favorite backpack I’ve ever had until I realized there was something terribly wrong with this pack; it was honestly ruining any and all clothing I was wearing with it. On two different occasions I wore brand new clothes (shirt and sweatshirt) and it completely ruin ones the lower backside of my clothes. Piling all over it from the rough mesh on the back of the pack. Super disappointed because I loved this bag! I wish I had read the other reviews with similar issues before hand!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid backpack, but with a few design flaws I have a 4 year old Refugio pack that I loved and used heavily ever since I got it. It still looks great after everything I've put it through. I bought a new Refugio this year since I was wanting a new color, and gave my old one to a family member. I loved that it was very water resistant - I walked in the rain with my laptop in the bag frequently and never worried about any damage. The separate laptop pocket in the new one is nice. However, my main issue is the placement and design of the water bottle pockets. It's almost impossible to get a water bottle in there while you are wearing the bag, if there is anything inside the bag. I have to ask for help putting in my water bottle. I did not have this issue with my old one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from good design but ruins all clothing I bought this backpack a month ago and was very excited for my first Patagonia product! It's an awesome design but ruins every type of material I own. It has ruined knit sweaters, cotton t-shirts, fleece hoodies and polyester leggings. I messaged a customer service agent who said they never heard of this issue before (even though Aaron posted on here before me) and I would receive in-store credit and suggested a new backpack with the same mesh backing. It would be cheaper for me to buy a new backpack than purchasing replacements of the destroyed items. I'm switching back to NorthFace.
