What Is Regulator® Fleece?
If it’s cold outside and you’re working hard, regulating your body temperature without overheating is the key to staying comfortable and staying out longer. Patagonia® Regulator® fleece styles strike that perfect balance of warmth, breathability and mobility, allowing sweat vapor to escape while trapping enough heat to keep you moving in chilly weather and shifting conditions.
It’s what makes Regulator fleece one of the most versatile and beloved products we make. You’ve probably seen them around: zigzag- or grid-patterned fleece with an “R” on the sleeve. But how does Regulator work, and how do you know which “R” is right for you?
Patagonia® Technical Fleece: The Heart of Your Layering System
Before we start, a quick review on layering. A layering system consists of three parts:
- A quick-wicking baselayer to move sweat away from your body.
- An insulating midlayer to trap heat and keep you warm.
- A weather-blocking outer shell to protect you from the elements.

The Signature “R”
Regulator® fleece is one of the best-known names in the midlayer category, but there are actually multiple styles that fall under the iconic “R”: R1®, R1® Air, R1® Ultralight, R1® Thermal, R1® TechFace and CrossStrata, and R2® TechFace and CrossStrata. All are built with lightweight, breathable and stretchy materials, but each is made for specific settings and weather scenarios.

R1®: The Original and Most Versatile
Meet the Patagonia R1, the piece that started it all in 1999. Back then, fleece was not a technical fabric; it was warm, breathable and wicking, but it was also heavy, bulky and prone to pilling and snagging. The R1 introduced a two-sided fleece that was smooth on the outside (for better durability and easier layering) and fuzzy on the inside with a waffle grid of channels (for better airflow, reduced weight and more compressibility while packed). This essentially created the “technical fleece” category.
The R1 has seen many changes over the years but remains the most versatile of our Regulator® fleece styles, and today’s version is no exception. The combination of Polartec® Power Grid® fleece body fabric and Capilene® Thermal Weight fabric panels provides lightweight, breathable warmth that blurs the lines between a baselayer and a light midlayer. R1 is perfect for high-output activities in shifting conditions.

R1® Air: The Most Breathable
First released in 2020, R1® Air swapped the iconic smooth-faced waffle grid for a zigzag-patterned fabric knit from hollow-core yarns. This makes the R1 Air warmer and more breathable than the original, a perfect combination that will prevent you from overheating during cold and strenuous objectives.

R1® vs. R1® Air: What’s the Difference?
While they’re both lightweight, breathable and stretchy, the R1® and R1® Air fleece each excel in their own ways. The R1’s finished exterior is more abrasion-resistant, making it great for high-wear activities when it needs to hold up to rocks, branches or heavy wear from pack straps. The R1 Air’s looser-knit zigzag fabric has an airier feel and is better at venting heat and sweat, meaning you stay drier and cooler when you’re working hard, especially in colder weather. However, because it’s fuzzy on both sides, it is not as abrasion-resistant and more likely to snag on rough surfaces.
R1® Ultralight: The Lightest
The R1® Ultralight is exactly what its name suggests: R1 versatility in the lightest Regulator® package. The fabric has a smooth exterior for easy layering, and a quick-wicking, baselayer-soft interior that adds minimal bulk to your layering system.
As part of our Free Wall Kit, the R1® Ultralight is designed for high-output, stop-and-go activities where every extra gram of weight counts. It also has two vertical-zippered chest pockets compared to the single chest pocket on the R1® and R1® Air, to keep items like snacks, topos or a phone easily accessible while wearing a harness or pack.
R1® TechFace and CrossStrata: The Most Protective
Our Men’s Regulator® TechFace fleece and Women’s Regulator® CrossStrata fleece jackets are cold-weather crossover layers that straddle the line between a soft-shell jacket and technical fleece—combining a soft, highly breathable Regulator® fleece interior with an abrasion- and weather-resistant face fabric. This combo blocks wind, flurries and light precip without trapping too much heat, making them incredibly versatile across a whole range of conditions and activities, from mountain biking to fly fishing to spring backcountry skiing.
R1® Thermal: The Warmest R1®
As the warmest of the R1 line, our Women’s R1® Thermal fleece and Men’s R1® Thermal fleece are built with a smooth, durable face fabric lined with a microgrid-fleece backing on the interior. The interior fleece is soft, breathable and incredibly cozy, and the face fabric adds a bit of weather protection against wind and light precip, though not as much as the R1® TechFace and CrossStrata.
R2® TechFace and CrossStrata: More Warmth and Protection
Men’s R2® TechFace and Women’s R2® CrossStrata are the warmer versions of their R1 counterparts, with a similar abrasion- and weather-resistant exterior but with thicker, higher-loft fleece on the inside. They’re still quite breathable, meaning they’ll work great as an active cold-weather midlayer or on their own as an outer layer in cold weather, similar to soft-shell jackets.
